should i drink alcohol while having this disease?

i have had ulcerative colitis for only a month and a half. would it be alright to drink alcohol while having this?

What meds are you on? I'm only on Asacol and Rowasa and can tolerate alcohol in moderation once in a great while, but I didn't want to drink at all when I was really sick. I'm not a big drinker anyway.

Alcohol can be hard on the colon, tread with caution...avoid alcohol while on certain meds, like Flagy (antibiotic)...check with your doc about alcohol and other meds you're on and the interaction if any, but keep in mind, alcohol can be hard on the colon.

Alcohol can be very irritating to an ulcerated colon and/or sensitive digestion. It can also increase your chances of relapse.

I occasionally drink a glass of wine. If I drink too much I'm paying the price the next day. Not to mention it is not great for the meds I'm on.

In extreme moderation, as long as you're not in an active flare, you should be okay, of course depending on your meds. I plan on maybe one drink Superbowl Sunday and I won't take my Xanax that day. (Should be interesting at my house, hubby from NY and a Giants fan, I am a former Massachusetts gal!)

asulfad ?spl I got a bad reaction to booze when I was on that stuff. There was about a five year stretch of of pred, rowasa and asacol where
I drank like a fish. I was on the T all the time anyway so I may as well be drunk. Beer,wine and vodka just about every day.
I think I was depressed. That was after about a three year bad flare(and zero drinking) and kinda just gave up and said ***udge.
Sometimes pass out on T.

I drinking on a semi-regular basic but not as much as I used to, which was an unhealthy amount anyway.

I had 3 beers with dinner tonight..... I would suggest asking your GI first but most of the time they will okay it as long as you do it with moderation.

Most doctors will tell you it's okay to drink in moderation. Keep in mind, though, that many of the medications we take are filtered through the liver, so putting too much extra work on your liver might not be the best for you.

Since I'm taking not only Balsalazide but Lipitor and other medications that can be liver toxic, I rarely drink alcohol. But that was my decision, and I didn't drink much before I had UC anyway.

I'd be more concerned about one's liver than one's colon. You can live without your colon.

Moderation is good, less is better....and binge-drinking just wears out your liver.

Use common sense......

I drink in moderation and it does not bother my colon. Always check with your doctor if you are on meds though.

I was a big drinker while on sulfasalazine from 24 to about 28 went out about 4 nights a week, then began slowing down, now I go out about one or two nights a week and a have a few drinks, sometimes a few more and sometimes just one or two. Every now and then will have a glass of wine at home.

moderation is key, see what works for you and check your meds and w/your Doc.

I just asked my GI about this yesterday. I asked if a beer once in a while was OK, and he said YES. He said just don't get carried away. Right now I have probably one beer (never more than one in a night) a couple of times a month.

Beer gives me Diarrhea. SO if I do drink it is vodka and fuse. Fuse is this bottled drink that has all kinds of added vitamins and nutrients with very little sugar.

Some days I can drink and feel fine, some days I'll have a few drinks and I will have blood in my BM that evening or the next day. I don't drink beer, I hate it- I've only had maybe a quarter of one in my whole life. I do love a good mixed drink or cocktail though, particularly strawberry margaritas :)

Although I am much more of a lightweight when I'm sick and I'll end up throwing up if I drink more than a few.

it's funny how today i checked out healingwell and my two hot topics which i tried posting stuff on months ago are two of the threads. awesome job guys and gals. i avoid all stuff with wheat just because that can sometimes be an irritant to me since when i was really sick i had a slight gluten sensitivity. i avoid carbonation. sugary is bad so i usually go for vodka (i usually go high end since it is the purest) and cranberry juice. it just can be tricky if you go out and places have the sugary cranberry mix from the tap. i will have a couple drinks but only when i have nothing important the next day - i usually have to use the bathroom a little more frequently that day. overall though i think it helps psychologically to be able to go out with friends and i have been doing really well this past week right after drinking for the first time in a while so i'm not convinced that its terribly bad. good luck and of course moderation is key.

I have a glass of wine now and then, no problem.
