Hello, I was just curious as to how quickly you all usually get relief from prednisone. I have been in a mild flare for the last month, but started getting worse a week ago. A sigmoidoscopy confirmed the mild flare on Wednesday.I started 40mg of prednisone on Wednesday, but am not noticing improvement yet. My first and only flare was over five years ago and was relieved quickly with prednisone, but I think it began through an iv so I assumed this may take longer to work.I am not taking a lot of bathroom trips but the mornings aren't good(still bleeding) and I don't feel too bad. I am also on 6 asacol per day. Should I be noticing relief soon? Thanks for your help.

Hi Luke. The 2 times I have had to be on pred I was on it orally, and both times I esponded within about 48 hours. It was like lightning hit me and suddenly I felt great. BUt I know lots of people on here say they can take a week or so to respond to it. If you haven't responded in 10 days, you may need to touch base with your GI. You said you went on it wednesday? today is friday.... I could wait a few more days before worrying about it. but, having said that, I would keep an eye on it. if your symptoms worsen, call your GI. sometimes pred becomes less effective over time, so judt monitor it. feel better soon.

As long as your flare is mild, you ought to see results pretty quickly. For me, it was like a switch was flipped overnight after the first day I took it. I was also started at 40 mg and immediately tapered by 5 mg each week.

For some folks, Asacol can cause problems. If things don't improve, you may want to talk to your doc about switching ASAs.

In the meantime, Mucosaheal, George's Aloe Vera and l-glutamine are all supplements good for healing the gut.

it took a little over a week for me. but i was in a much worse state than it sounds like you are. was also on 6 asacol.
hang in there and try not to worry about it.
hope you stop seeing blood soon!

Thanks for your replies. I am hoping to see improvement soon. I actually have seen more blood the day of and since I had the sig done the other day. I don't know if that could have caused some extra irritation as well. After going 5 and a half years without any issues, this has hit me pretty hard and I was hoping for the pred to work superfast to rest my mind, but I guess I'll just have to try and give it some time.  Thanks again.
