Did everyone hear about the Japanese study?

Now we have to be even more concerned about our docs - seems they do the colonoscopy too fast and they've been missing the flat lesions and only looking for the more readily apparant polyps. The flat and indented lesions are the ones that cause cancer to appear after a seemingly fine test. The only way to really see them it seems is with dye and a very slow careful test. Very upsetting to those of us that just had one done!

I also read that they hae a special florescent light at the end of the scope and that will make any lesion "glow". I am not sure how many docs are using it though. Sounds like it should be mandatory to me, but it is all about the money here.

On the other hand, they said that competent practitioners do catch these lesions. I guess the best thing would be to pick a competent doctor, and talk to him or her about this.

I agree, I bet not every GI goes through quickly during scopes and where I live I know they use the florescent light on the end.

There was a study about a year or so ago that studied how long doctors took to do colonoscopies. Some doctors did it in under 10 minutes (maybe less, I can't remember) and missed things. I've never asked my doctor how long she takes to do a scope but that's probably an interesting question to ask the doctor... or better, yet, the assisting nurses. I always like when I hear that the nurses choose my doctor for their c-scopes.

Just got back from my Gastro visit. He said what's needed is the florescent light not the dye. He said as Endo units replace scopes they are getting them but of course, they're more expensive so not every hospital will be getting them right away. He did say the flat ones are alot harder to see with a normal scope but in my case he thinks the other parts of the picture that he uses to make his diagnosis do not point to my being concerned. I just hope that when I have it re-done next year they have the new ones.
