OT: Pred and Poison Ivy

The past few years I have been getting poison ivy, not too bad (not crazy swelling or anything) but I get splotches of it and it looks gross and takes weeks to go away.  I actually get it from my outdoor cat, he gets it on his fur and when I pet him and pick him up I get it on my skin (I have done a ton of research, I could not figure out how I was getting it, this is how).

Anyhow, seeing as how I will be on at least 5mg of pred for the next year and poison ivy season is coming up.........I wonder if I wont get poision ivy this yr. b/c I am on pred????

Ok, I don't know if this is wrong or not. But poison ivy reactions are caused by a histamine reaction. The histamine reaction is set into motion by the immune system. Now, being on something that suppresses the immune system you would think that it would suppress the histamine reaction right? At least for me that is wrong - I am allergic to many things and I was hoping that by being on 6mp that my allergies would stop. They haven't :( In fact, they became more pronounced. But for some, by being on something that has immune suppressing ability, it may lower your immune system to that of a normal individual. Especially if you only on that low of dose of pred. So I say, you should still take precautions.

most definitely, I will not be rolling around in it = ) I was wiping him off w/paper towels when he would come back in.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but poison ivy is a greasy type substance and by just wiping you may be spreading the oily residue all over his fur - not really getting rid of it. I'm not quite sure what you can use to get it out of his fur - maybe non toxic baby wipes?

you are so right! I should know that, duh, with my professed expertise........

My friend buys special wipes at Petco for her dogs and I should probably get some for my cat, though that could get expensive, since in the summer he goes in an out a lot!
