o.k . I called my GI and got in last monday because i had started bleeding. he was not worried and said it was IBS and not the Crohn's or UC and that the blood was coming from internal hemorrhoids (I have no idea if they are there) and just had me continue on the same meds and come back in a month. well, the bleeding is heavier with clots and i don't know what to do. i asked what signs i should look for and he said he'd see me in a month. i have always thought he was the best GI i ever had but i am getting ready to go on vacation out of the country for a week and i am afraid I will end up really sick when I'm there. does anyone think it could really be the invisible hemmorhoids or a flare up?? my husband is an M.D. (ob/gyn) but he says he doesn't know either... anyone have any ideas??? please help if you have any ideas....

I've never heard that you can have actual clots from bleeding hemmies, but that doesn't mean it's not so, however to me it seems unlikely, if I was bleeding clots from my butt I'd be going to the ER myself.

i have never gone to the ER in my life. i guess with an MD husband and an arsenal of meds around this house i figure i can do what they can do and be in the comfort of my own home even though my hubbie will be quick to tell that this is NOT his area of expertise. I did look up the treatments for them and mostly they really don't treat unless it's an emergency situation and since it's not hurting much i guess they wouldn't think it's and emergency? not to mention, we have no health insurance except catastrophic on me alone (although they probably wouldn't charge me anyway unless i was admitted. my GI did not do a rectal exam so that's why i cannot understand his diagnosis.

I've been to the ER only once, and I was helicoptered in. Nothing to do with UC. Emergency rooms are basically there to stabilize you and keep you alive until you can get to your doctor. If you're a trauma or heart attack patient, that involves a lot of care, delivered quickly. If you have a chronic problem of any kind, it's fluids and steroids for UC, nebulizer and meds for asthma, stitches and antibiotics for a cut. And you usually wait until the trauma/heart attack group is done.
Many ER's will give you enough medication for about
five days and tell you to follow up with your doctor. The problem is, a lot of people skip that step because they feel better. Then the cause for their ER trip never gets appropriate treatment and just keeps coming back.
I'd rather go to my own docs, even if that means I can't wait until I absolutely can't function any more. They have my records, know what's been tried, what worked and what didn't. They also know how my body reacts to various treatments.

I don't understand why your doctor is ignoring the bleeding. I also don't understand how he would know without a full exam that the bleeding was not the UC or Crohn's. I would call back, make an emergency appointment for ASAP so that you can get this under control before you leave the country. Some kind of rectal med should help.
Bleeding untreated does not seem like a good course of action to me even if your doctor says it's nothing.
Is it more blood than you've seen before? I don't have personal experience with clots, but that sounds like more than just a little blood on the paper.

When i first started bleeding in the summer of 06 i called my doc after a month of not telling anyone and hiding it. I finally thought i was going to die and called to make an appointment. And told the nurse my symptoms and she called back and said it was just hemorrhoids and nothing to worry about
it will stop and go away on its own. I ignored it and still didn't really tell any one. I bleed for 4 months with urgency and D before going into the hospital because i was vomiting and dizzy and they did a CBC and found my blood count was a 6! (it should be around a 12 or 14) so..... now i don't wait any sign of a problem and I go in right away. And it worries me that your GI is doing the same thing, don't ignore the problem. It is not normal to have blood especially if it is getting worse! Don't think it will just go away on its own, because with experience it doesn't just "go away" it just gets worse and then i end up needing blood transfusions and a hospital stay (which are not fun) and with out a colonoscopy they can not tell the difference between hemorrhoids and UC!

I was bleeding real bad like it was dark purple, real bad. My doc said Yep it's UC take asacol and rowasa. I drove 2 1/2 hours to see him and when he put that scope up my I was crying for my mommy b/c the ulcers were so fresh.
