prednisone question-nor related to ucbut maybe you have an opinion

hi-my dad has been in the hospital for about 4 weeks now- he had a heart attack
and ended up with a stent and balloon. because he only has 1 funtioning kidney he's not
an easy case, the dye for angiograms is riskier for him then 2 kidney person- anyway the problem is
that he has to take prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis-he can't move without it- but now that he's moved to the rehab section and put him back on prednisone his anlkles and lower leggs are swollen with fluid- i think we should take him to the cardiologis
but the dr at rehab says it's from the prednisone-they are going to lower his dose. i know you can blow up from prednisone, but this is juist in his lower leggs. on hte phone the cardiologist says it's from the prednisone-he can't come into the rehab facility-should i insist
that my dad take an ambulette service to the cardiologist?

Maybe you can ask this question on our heart forum to see if you would get better answers or more responses. I know that when my FIL was in the hospital for a crack rib cartiledge/pnuemonia that his ankles started swelling so they did a kidney function test on him. His kidneys weren't working right so after they fixed that his swelling went down a bit. Has he had his kidney checked recently?

thanks for your answer -he only has 1 kidney so there is always care given to that,
i just thought that there is so much experience with prednisone on this board someone
may have insight into the ankles swelling part and not he moon face/whole body swelling. i wll go to the heart forum-thanks again

hi Please,

I have kidney disease and am on pred for that. I had some swelling prior to that b/c of the disease but since being on the pred, my calves ankles and feet really swell up and there is not much I can do to keep the swelling down. I take a diuretic but, I don't take much b/c I need to give my kidneys a rest and chance to heal.

If I have a lot of salt, they really swell up, so talk to the Doc about a low salt diet and keeping the legs elevated. Also, i'm not sure if they can drain the fluid, if it gets real bad.

Also, may be good to have a urinalysis to check for protiens in his urine (why not at this point), that could be a kidney disease if there are proteins. Edema is a symptom of kidney disease.

So yes, the pred made me swell and someone posted here the other day that they got swollen from pred too.
