I am not a big drinker since it aggravates my Uc but lately anytime I even have a few drinks, the next day I break out in these weird pimple like things.  I didn't put two and two together until today.  I went out to a friends bday party last Saturday, had a couple of drinks and the next day I had this huge, cyst like thing under my lower lip.  I woke up this morning and it looked like someone gave me a fat lip. Plus I had those weird pimple like things - one on the bridge of my nose, 3 on my neck and one on my chest.  Do you think that this can be from the 6mp and maybe it is increasing some sort of sensitivity or maybe an allergic reaction to something in the alcohol? 

Oh and did I mention that darn rash is back on my chin and upper lip??? grrrrr eyes

I just looked up 6-mp on webmd.com and it states that you shouldn't drink alcohol with 6-mp. Does it say anything about that on your prescription bottle? Of course you always have to take what you read on the internet with a grain of salt. If its bothering you or worry some, I'd call your GI.

Yeah, I asked my GI and the pharmacist and they said that as long as don't abuse alcohol I would be fine. I am by far NOT a big drinker anyway.

Could it be something in one of those drinks? I broke out in hives after having strawberry daquiris and margaritas after I turned 21. Wasnt the alcohol but the RED DYE!! I'm allergic to red dye 40 and there just happened to be a lot in those drinks. Now I cant have it at all. Not even sweedish fish.

Sorry you are going through that, Sherry! I used to notice my joint pains would greatly increase after drinking alcohol while on Remicade. This past weekend when I had alcohol for the first time since being off Remicade, I didn't have any joint pains but now I am flaring up with my UC. Maybe there is a connection to immunosuppresants and alcohol intolerance? Also, I know that you aren't sure about your Fibro dx, but from what I understand, people with Fibromyalgia usually have an intolerance to alcohol... just my thoughts... Do you think a dermatologist could help you figure it out?

This must have been the weekend for drinking............I did my share of drinking this weekend too. And it has been awhile..........But, I was lucky and I'm not suffering for it. Hope you guys feel better soon.

Sounds like an allergy to me. They can show up in the oddest way. What exactly did you drink? Was there a mixer?

I think that just because the doc says as long as you don't overdo alcohol doesn't mean your body can handle it..especially when you're on 6-MP.

You have a lot going on...don't push it. Your body's doing more and more on its own...I'd be afraid to find its limit.

Have you gone to a dermatologist regarding your facial rash?

No I haven't seen a derm doc yet for the rash. It JUST came back about 2 days ago. I have to see my primary for EVERYTHING before I'm referred out to any sort of specialist. I have doctors lined up out the door it seems lately! So if the rash is still there after my pain doc appt tomorrow and my rheumy doc appt on Monday (I'm going to show him the rash to have his input) THEN I will see my primary about it. Yeah, I know I can't push my body until I know what it is that I'm fighting - but I was so ticked at the world and I want to feel NORMAL ya know? That's why I had a couple drinks well also because it tastes good! LOL. I've been finding myself getting angry again at my situation - it seems that the grieving period doesn't end does it? I am so angry and envious to anyone that can just go out there and not think about what goes thru their lips. While I on the other hand, die the next day if I eat the wrong thing or drink the wrong thing. Oops sorry didn't mean for that to turn out to a rant - just got away from me LOL!

Red, where exactly is the rash? Is it possible you have Rosacea, another one of the wonderful auto immune diesees? I was diagnosed with Rosacea about 28 years ago. It is treated with topical ointments. Sometimes it is itchy, red, some small pimples, some days my cheeks are warm to the touch. This condition is sensitive to alcohol, hot beverages, cold beverages......I can usually cover up the rosy cheeks with a little covergirl powder or a little foundation. Some days they my face is redder than others........When I get aggravated or nervous about something, that also triggers it......

I was dx'd with the rosacea around 18 years ago, not 28, oops!! I see a dermo for this occasionally

Donna, no it's not rosacea. I have random rashes and other issues going on right now which is why I am seeing the rheumy doc soon. I have 1 true rash on my face and an outbreak of something else. The rash I have is around my mouth - upper and lower. At first I thought it was the toothpaste - which it can still be I guess - but I switched to an all natural toothpaste and the rash went away. Until 2 days ago - which coindently (sp?) happened right after I had the couple of drinks now that I think about it. The other things are red pimple like things - they look like a plain zit but way under the skin and it's red around it. I can't even pop them because they are way under the skin. It's odd. But I have one by my eye (bridge of my nose), had 3 on my neck and 1 on my chest not to mention that huge one under my lip.

These rashes predated my 6mp consumption but the new outbreaks are just plain weird and usually only after I have a couple drinks. This is a new development btw. Never had a problem with alcohol (skin wise) in the past before.

Sherry....your rant is valid. But don't punish yourself further...
Alcohol will flush the skin, and if you're sensitive to it...can cause an autoimmune reaction. It's not the alcohol, per se,...it's the reaction you want to avoid.

The fact that the rash, lesions, zits are still there is interesting. Could be coincidence. Definitely rosacea comes in different forms/stages and on different parts of the face...it could still be rosacea in part...especially since it's after alcohol.


I hope the rheumy will give some insight.
