Well, it all depends on how its done at each facility. There are different ways. The clinics I"ve worked at don't do colonoscopys but do flexible sigmoidoscopys. The equipment is the same, except the colonoscope is much longer than the sigmoidoscope. At the clinic where I work now, the GI docs equipment gets cleaned in a special machine with special chemicals. I would think as long as its running properly, and maintenance on a regular basis, that it would be the best method. At another clinic, the equipment got cleaned by the people working there using either a chemical called Wavicide or Cidex. There is a big long process involved, and proper training needs to be done.....so if thats not done properly or if the employee does only a half-azzed job, it definately could be a concern.
