Hi to All,

Just another new person with a lot of questions....

Diagnosised in 1984 with mild U/C. Did not have a flare for 16 years, until 2000. Have had 3 flares since. Going through my 3rd flare presently. This time my body is not responding to the Asacol....Kinda' down about it. Been going on since mid Jan.

Does anyone know if one can develop an allergic reaction to Asacol after you have been on it for awhile???

Over the past month I upped the dosage to 3 pills 3 times a day, per the Dr.'s ok. And I had noticed the tip of my tong would be raw...It kept getting worse....sores in the mouth. And last week I started getting whelps on my left hand and a few on my face????? Called the Dr. and he said that I had something else wrong...that since I had been taking the Asacol...the problems I'm having are not related. But, go ahead and stop the Asacol until this week.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar circumstances.

And, yes the sores and whelps are going away....slowly.

Hi Mule, welcome to Healingwell :) Yes you can still develop an allergic reaction even if you've been on it long term or before. I was on Asacol for 12 years when my body decided that it didn't like it anymore. For me though, I had severe abdominal pain, increased D and bleeding. Once I switched to Colazal, things got better.

Onecan definitely be allergic to salicylates or maybe sensitive to some of the 5ASA meds.

You aren't on any rectal meds....maybe ask the doc to prescribe you a steroid retention foam enema (not a 5ASA) to see if that helps.

Your symptoms could also be autoimmune or stress? Are you taking any other meds or supplements?.

How long have you been on Asacol?

Where in the colon is your UC....throughout or limited?

My daughter is allergic to Asacol and got Pacreatitis, she was very very sick.  She took it for about a month before the pacrea*** show up.

Thanks for the replies....so glad I found this Forum....Good to know that someone out there has empathy.

Qunicy....I've been on Asacol since mid January. And is the only thing I've taken. In times past I've responded well to Asacol. Symptoms would clear up and I would stop the dosage. Guess I've been lucky till now.

The UC is limited to just the lower part of my colon...sorry I'm not able to describe with the correct colon terminology.

But, to add to what happened to me last week, I thought I was having an allergic reaction, because the symptoms of UC had gotten better, for awhile, then last week got worse. The Asacol seemed to be making me sick. Hard to explain, because the symptoms of UC seem to be the same as the symptoms of an alergic reaction to Asacol....If I'm reading the Asacol fine print correctly.

Hello there :) Welcome to HW! The members here are great - lots of empathy, experience, and knowledge.

I get sores on my tongue when I flare. Usually it means I'm low on B12, so I supplement with B12 pill. Sometimes I'll even dissolve it on my tongue - it doesn't have much of a taste. I will also use Biotene mouthwash - as it helps balance bacteria in the mouth - to help with the sores.

I hope you find something that works for you!

DAKOTAGIRL!!!!......Thank You!!!!....I had no idea about the B12 supplement.

That little bit of information is what I'm looking for....It may not work for me...But it's worth a try. Then I may start back on the Asacol.
