The more I read about
the spice turmeric, the more I think this is something that I (and my family members who don't have UC) should take daily. I've read that it can lower the incidence of Alzheimer's and certain kinds of cancer. But the part that makes sense for people with UC is the anti- inflammatory properties.
I have some turmeric capsules but I'm a bit afraid to take them. The directions say to take them in the middle of a larger meal with 8 oz. of water. First, I usually eat pretty small meals. Second, I don't usually drink a lot of water all at once. I'm wondering if others have taken the capsules and found that you can take them without following those directions to a T.
I always figure that it's best to try a new pill during the day and during the week. The last thing I want is an allergic reaction or something at 10 PM on a Saturday! So I figure I'll wait until Monday at lunch to give it a shot.
Anyone else take turmeric capsules? What is your experience?
Thanks!

A recent study, which I don't actually have a link to, showed Tumeric to be no more effective then placebo in the maintenance of UC...
Tried to find the study, but sadly there is so much about
Turmeric on health sites that I couldn't dig it up again. I think it was posted "somewhere" to HealingWell in the UC forum, but the Google search for HW has much to be desired.

Thanks, Severin. I think that at this point I'd be happy with just the placebo effect!

How good is hypnotherapy in the treatment of colitis?

That's not something many would ever consider...or that I've heard mention except a one-time suggestion as you posted..
I can't see how the process would be of help since our pooing process can be quite efficient.
water therapy wouldn't heal anything....

In my opinion, Tumeric is a waste of time. The anti-inflammatory agent is curcumin within the tumeric, but it really isn't possible to get a high enough dose with Tumeric, you should take pure curcumin.
Further, the bioavailability of curcumin is limited. It is best absorbed when combined with black pepper. If you can't tolerate pepper due to your UC, then eating a meal with fat in it will also help absorption. They also sell curcumin capsules that contain pepper if you don't generally put a lot of pepper on your food.
Make sure you take at least 1 gram of curcumin twice a day. No guarantees it ends up working, but this is the only way to truly see if it does anything, you need a high enough dose and make sure its actually getting absorbed.

Quincy, that was HYPNOtherapy, as in hypnosis...you are getting very sleepy....
You saw Hydro-therapy, which is water therapy....
I'm taking Curcumin for the first time, trying to get off prednisone. I'm not sure yet what my opinion is. The studies that I've seen online (PubMed.org) say you need between 4000-8000mg. per day!! And that there does not seem to be any side effects except for D. So, I'm working my way up to 4000mg a day. So far so good.
I would never just try to get this amount from Turmeric in food. No way.
I figure its worth a try as I don't want the side effects of the prednisone!!
Plus I've got other issues going on with major inflammation in pancreas and joints...so hopefully somewhere it will take hold.

I dont think its a waste of time, you have to remember if you decide to take a more natural approach to manage your illness, it will take time to see a difference. I know Tumeric has helped me, from the get go I started sprinkling a little bit of it every morning over my eggs (or anything salty and not sweet). It's a wonder antioxidant that has so many anti-inflammatory agents to combat disease, but you're not going to feel it the same way... like a drug.

I use the curcumin, but I do not worry so much about
the absorption. The benefit to UC seems to be topical. If you want it to benefit something outside the GI tract, then absorption is more of an issue.
Funny story, my case is complicated by poor absorption of bile salts due to removal of my ileocecal valve. Turns out curcumin increases bile salt production/release (and thus adds to diarrhea). I did not know this for the first 6 months I was taking the supplement. I have this managed now because I also take a drug to bind unabsorbed bile salts. But, it did remind me that "just trying things" does have some risk, and that one should not assume that something will have no unintended effect just because it is a supplement and not a drug.

hypnotherapy does work. the subconscious mind has the power to heal the body if you can tap into it via meditation and hypnosis. if you are curious, watch the movie "The Secret"

sayyadina:
You are telling me that you take 34.000 thousand mg. of Turmeric daily?? thousand?
Wow. I'm way under doing it if you have documented studies that this is beneficial. I'd love to know where you got
that information!!
The only studies I found are from PubMed.org and they say between 4,000-8,000 mg per day
.
I found out that Target here in Roseville, MN will order VSL#3 DS for me if I get a prescript
ion.
I'm excited and hope my insurance will pay for it as it's about
140.00 for a month.

i would certainly look at tumeric or any other herbal supplement in the same way as regular meds - some peple will have great success others not a lick of relief -
