swollen glands-sore throats-strep- is it 6mp?

my daughter has had a sore trhroat with strep 2x in the last 3 months or so, now her throat huts again, but so far no strep-she has a very large node in her neck
the dr says it's from the previous strep infections, but it just came out 2 days ago -you can see it sticking out- she just had all her blood work and aside from being anemic the counts were good- i'm worried abbout the 6mp causing this - has
anyone had this kind of experience with all of the sore throats?
she has responded well clinically to the meds-her sigmoidoscopy showed no sign of disease-we are waiting to be sure the biopsies are clean- we are so twisted about this 6mp!
any input would be welcome.

p.s. i tried to edit the drug list-signature- the enemas should all be off the list but my mac is old and it sometimes doesn't let me do these things.

I get tons of sore throats. I blame mine on my little germ machine (aka my toddler). Make sure she is being super dilligent about hand washing and sanitizing. I also added a vitamin that has an immune boaster. Is she seeing a regular doc for the sore throats or an ENT. I just got over strep...it was miserable. I am sorry she is having a tough time.

Hi there. Sorry to hear about this. 6MP does lower your resistance to germs but I've actually never had a problem with getting sick a lot with 6MP. In fact, I usually get a ton of colds, etc. and since I've been on 6MP, I've been totally normal in that regard. It could just be because she's a student and exposed to a lot of interactions with people. I agree with tjf that hand sanitizer is a good thing!

Did you say that there's no sign of inflammation from the sigmoidoscopy? That's quite amazing in a short amount of time. I'm really happy to hear that her colitis is responding to the drugs. I know she had a really hard time of it in the fall/winter. I really admire her for being able to be so diligent about all the different meds at such a young age. And I know that you worked really hard to get her good care. So brava to both of you. I hope the sore throats clear up soon! Hang in.

PLEASE, be sure she's taking the full course of antibiotics. Strep can "hide" and come back on you if it isn't fully treated. Also, more and more strep varieties are becoming resistant to the antibiotics, so it's not a bad idea to get a repeat throat culture ten days to two weeks after finishing the antibiotics.

And suggest she double up on the probiotics while on antibiotics, taking the pro at least two to three hours after the anti.

I got a few really horrible sore throats last fall. It wasn't strep any of the times. I ended up getting a peritonsillar abcess and had to get my tonsils out because it was not responding to antibiotics at all, even in IV form. I had never had any problems with my tonsils before getting UC...probably just a coincidence. I'm not on 6-mp. I do know that lymph nodes can remain swollen for weeks after an infection is gone...but if it just reappeared I'm not sure what's going on. Hope your daughter feels better soon.

Okay.. this is going to sound crazy but it works for me. Since I got UC I sometimes get a swollen glad <or both> in my throat. Its sore and hurts to push on it... I complained to my DR about it.. I had the throat swabs done and blood work, etc and nothing came of it. My DR told me to gurgle with LISTERINE mouthwash 3 times a day. I thought he was crazy but tried it and it DOES clear up my swollen glands!! Since then.. I have found the certain things seem to make my glands in my throat swell.. ex.. chinese food, anything spicy and pepper. After eating any of these foods, the next day my throat is swollen. My boss at work would see them swollen and say "You were eating something ya weren't suppose to be again weren't ya" ... that day I would start the gargling with the LISTERINE again and within 2 days the swelling is gone.

Seriously!! Can't hurt to try right?

thank you for her- she really was scared and followed the drs. orders. i did mention that the 6mp was a bit frightening to us-explaining to her the "possible ramifications" and then helping her decide to begin. it probably kicked in in the las couple of weeks because they say it takes 3-4 months, so it was a combination of all the enemas and the colazol and i believe strongly that the xifaxin/rifaxamin is what stopped the bleeding so quickly.
we shall see as the weeining begins.

I was told to gargle with warm salt water several times a day when I had bad sore throats and was in the hospital for my peritonsillar abcess. Might be worth a shot. One doctor told me to try gargling with the Listerine, but I think that actually made me worse.

That's terrific if your daughter's UC has come under control! I think that Sara14 is giving her sound advice about the warm salt water gargle. It has worked for my throat-- & I still have tonsils/adenoids. In any case, it can't hurt to try on a regular basis for a couple weeks or a month-- totally natural, minimal price for salt. Hopefully, your daughter will benefit from summertime reduction in communicable ailments, too. Best wishes! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)
