My mother recently had a number of scans done - just as precaution. She had a bowel scan done - not a c-scope just an image via a CT scan. In her report they noted "a slight thickening of the bowel wall". Her consultant just commented that it is something they will keep and eye on.

Does anyone know what a slight thickening of the bowel wall means. Is this something that happens as you grow older or does it lead to the potential for polyps to be present etc?

I have strictures which showed as thickening of the colon wall on a ct. My GI said it was scarring from 10 yrs of UC. Does your mom have IBD?

I really haven't done anything about it. They are also keeping an eye on it. I do find that I can't handle as much fiber as I could before. I guess the biggest worry is that it gets to thick and causes blockage but my GI is not worried at all. I did get to see it on the scope though. It was weird becuase i was also flaring so it was a little like white lattice with red behind it.

A CT showed a thickening of the bowel wall on the right side of my colon. I thought it might be a sign that I had been misdiagnosed and had Crohn's instead of colitis. I often have pain on the right side that's also been mistaken for appendicitis. No explanation from the docs. I think they just chalked it up to general inflammation of UC.

I've got a slight thickening of the left wall of my colon- showed on a CT scan. My GI told me it was from UC, scarring. Nobody seemed too concerned, so neither am I!

I also had thickening of the colon wall show up on a CT scan. DR. just said it was UC inflammation and nothing out of the ordinary. No concern really.

No, she has no history of IBS nor IBD nor has she ever shown any symptoms of either. Was more concerned about cancer but I guess if the consultant is happy to let it go it's not a big issue.

Damo...has she ever had a colonoscopy? Did the doc consider to do blood tests for inflammation, cancer markers..etc?

I'd caution to not only trust a CT scan and leave it for assumption.

Where exactly is the thickening?

Yes, all her cancer and inflammation markers are normal. The consultant didn't talk much about the thickening just to casually refer to it and say they'll scan it again in 6 months.

Was it a GP that sent her for the scans or a GI?
Do you have a copy of the results?
How old is your mom?
