Can prednisone just stop working?

I have been flaring since mid may and have been taking 40mg of prednisone. I was responding well as far as the bleeding goes. I was having pretty normal stool with a little blood from time to time. I was having stomach pain, but I seemed to be getting better otherwise. I tapered to 30 mg for almost two weeks and things were still going well. Then a few days ago I started with the bloody d again and I don't know how this happened. I have been eating pretty bland food and haven't done anything out of the ordinary. I'm so frustrated! Is it possible for prednisone to just stop working? Has anyone else experienced this?

I think this can happen when we are tapering, it may mean you are steriod dependant, I would contact your GI.

I am going to try my second taper, last time I got down to 5mg but started bleeding 2 days after I took aspirin, so I don't know if I am 'steriod dependant' and the imuran is not working for me and I need to go to remicade or if it was the aspirin that caused my flare.

I just went back up to 40mg a week ago and am doing much better, I want to stay at 40 for a couple of weeks if/once I reach remission and then will taper by 10mg a week to 20mg a week then taper by 5mg a week until I reach 5mg where I have to stay for my kidney disease.

Also, going from 40 to 30 may have been too much of a drop. You might need to taper down slower like maybe 5 mg at a time.
