I am 62 years old....was diagnosed one month after my 16th birthday.....took them about a month to diagnose. Went from a pretty healthy kid, had not missed a day of school from 4th to 11th grade and then one night, I got really sick, fever and diarrhea that would not go away. I lost 30 lbs in two weeks and needed 6 blood transfusions. It took them two weeks after I was admitted to the hospital to diagnose and i stayed there for another two weeks.

So do the math. I still have my colon, and still have UC for a grand total of 46 years.

Do I win????

Jjc2007, you definitely win.............Glad to hear that you have done so well for so long. Azulfidine is what has worked for me also. Do you consider yourself in remission right now? If so, for how long? What is the longest remission that you have experienced? And one more question.....Have you ever stopped your meds and started back up or have you continued to take them for all these years?

I am 28 year old male and have had it since I was 25. I may be different than most b/c I know that a wild night of benge drinking beer was my "trigger." I couldn't eat the next day and the Diahrea got worse and worse until I saw blood a week later. I never had Diahrrea problems before that.

I will be 53in July and was dx last July. But had stomach problems for years and years.

I'm 31 now. Was diagnosed at 27. I had real bad pain in stomach region and was using the restroom 22 times in a 24 hour period. GI was called in and he immediately knew what it was.

Donna,

I consider myself in "limited" remission, a term I made up for myself. I have a yearly colonoscopy and my GI can always see the tell tale signs of UC....some years worse than others. I am prescribed 2 x 500mg of Azulfadine, 3 x daily but unless I am in a flare I take them only twice and have gone as low as once daily. I don't believe I have ever gone an entire year without at least one flare. Most times now, though, the flares are mild and tolerable......and don't last more than a few weeks.
Since menopause for me things have improved. But I still seem to have a flare almost every April.....I swear, it's a weird April thing. Also, since I retired when I do have flares it's much easier to deal with.

As well, I have added Metamucil and Collace, and Digestive Advantage probiotics. I feel pretty good these days.

I am 25 now and was diagnosed on my 18th birthday....HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME-total bummer!! I never had any symptoms until about three weeks before I was diagnosed. Went into remission very quickly after being put on meds and didn't have a major flare until this time last year (planning a wedding, dealing with my father's cancer and buying a house can really stress a person out!). I am almost in remission again so lets keep our fingers crossed!
