I had a serious reaction to Asacol a few years ago. I just saw a new GI today and he recommended trying some of the other meds (Lialda,Canasa...etc) before starting Remicade or Humeria. Is anyone else allergic to Asacol? What meds work for you? I'm scared of having another allergic reaction! (I cant take 6mp either)

what was your reaction? Some of us can tolerate certain 5-ASA products better than others. To be sure, the other meds you mention have side effects, too. From what I understand, they're the 2nd line meds if the 5-ASA (or mesalamine) drugs don't work. Good luck!

I developed a fever, vomiting, chills, dehydration within 4 days of taking the Asacol. I had to be hospitalized for a few days. Im just confused on how I would be able to take other 5-ASA drugs if Asacol (mesalamine) didn't work. :-/

I just posted to someone whose SO may have been having a severe reaction to Lialda...I was just given samples and had just read the sales reps booklet, along with my own severe reaction which went unrecognized (GI did not want to admit it), it compelled me to reply...

 

You can use the search site button above for Lialda and get my previous reply to KWAA if you would like to see if that info applies to what happened to you as well as doing Canasa and see what posts come up for that drug...

 

You may be surprised at the info I quoted from the Lialda drug packaging stating that it is difficult to distinguish a reaction from an exaserbation...While they admit 3% (likely more) of patients during clinical trials were affected as well as the fact that they don't really know how it works...I can't recall the exact words but to read more see the thread I spoke of above...I just replied moments ago on the Crohn's board...Hope that helps...

Thanks for the info! All these reactions sure are scary! I am taking prevacid before I take prednisone to help with stomach pain and nausea. Its helping a little bit I think.

I also developed fever, chills a full body rash and nausea a couple of hours after taking just one dose of 4 pills...I'm either allergic or non-responsive to oral RX used for IBD so I had no choice but to go the natural route.

Have you ever tried Colazal? Even though Colazal is still a 5-ASA it is a Balsalazide not a mesalamine. I can't tolerate Asacol, Rowasa or Canasa - any mesalamines really. I get severe abdominal pain, joint pain and explosive D. I don't seem to have any difficulty with Colazal (I think). So if you are hesitant about starting Lialda (as I would be too especially with a bad reaction to Asacol) you can ask for Colazal.

Oh also forgot to mention, Colazal is best used in people with left sided Uc because the med gets distributed to that area better then Asacol.

I will definitely mention it at my next appointment. I have a colonoscopy on Tuesday, if it is still left sided then that could be an option. Im worried its further in my colon then it was 5 years ago when i had my last scope. The scope will tell all!
