Cramps during BM

Can anyone here suggest a way of reducing the painful cramps I get during my bowel movements?

I only get them just before I have to go... Could this be a sign of a flare-up?

you mean rectal cramping and the feeling you have to push .... white-knuckling through bms? Yes, you're flaring and get on rectal meds asap.

The cramping I get tend to be more in the transverse colon (the bit across the belly) and the pain hurts in the centre above the belly-button?

The end seems to be fine.

Oh..could be spasming...you could ask the doc for an antispasmodic to see if that helps. The other thing it could be is gasssssss.

Any new foods or meds lately? Under new stress?

I use Hyociamine or Levsin as needed for cramping similar to what you describe. It is an RX from the GI. I dissolve a pill under my tongue and it works wonderfully. I always describe that type of cramping like someone wringing a washcloth, as it goes across my lower belly and up the left side in most cases. Are your stools soft or loose? Do you take any type of fiber on a regular basis, as that can both bulk up your stool or loosen it as needed. I think a rectal drug (i.e. Rowasa or Canasa) also helps.

What about Buscopan is that any good for these cramping/spasms?

shoe girl - waht is the drug you take type-wise?

Since you are having cramps during the BM process I would agree with quincy - in my humble opinion.

Good luck and love to all here  When I get the non-bm type cramps - I try to use a heating pad and some horizontal positioning (my life is horizontal these days it seems!).

it says buscopan is an antispasmodic..if you have it, start using it.

I've tried the Buscopan and it works a treat, gets rid of the spasms/cramps straight away.

I still have loose diarrhea though, any ideas on how to resolve this?

Someone mentioned Fibre Supplements - isn't Fibre contradictory in Ulcerative Colitis?

Lots of info and discussions on fibre daily.

The premise is that fibre absorbs water....it helps keep the colon exercised...so if you have diarrhea, it'll help absorb the extra water that the colon doesn't.

The colon doesn't absorb water because it's either inflamed and rushing stuff out; spasming and not in its rhythmic peristalsis process therefore rushing stuff out; or you have eaten something that's fibre, but the kind that's doesn't absorb water such as salad, veggies, etc.

The type of fibre supplement you would want is a stool "bulker". psyllium is such as is inulin or methylcellulose.

So, if this is new and continual, it could be food (enjoying the fruits of the summer?).

How many times a day are you going?

At the moment its 4 at night and 6 in the day and its usually very loose.

I think a stool bulker could be a good idea - I'll go to the health store tomorrow and try to find one.
