Anyone have experience with Toddler diagnosis?

I am looking for anyone who has had a toddler go through a colonoscopy.  My son (2 1/2) is scheduled for one in a couple of weeks due to suspected UC and I am terrified.  Specifically, the Dr. says he will need to be administered the GoLightly through an NG tube over a 12 hour period the day prior, and sedatives during this period are not an option.  Has anyone had a different experince?  I just can't fathom putting him through that, but at this point he needs the colonoscopy.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Gosh, I hate to read of another tiny one facing UC. Come over to dragonpack: http://www.dragonpack.com/ibdsupport/parents/ There are actually quite a few infant/toddler with IBD including a little guy named Max who was dx about your son's age. He is now 4 and doing well. DragonPack is full of parents supporting each other and with tons of great advice.

It is actually amazing how well kiddos handle the tests and such. If his procedure is done in a children's hospital, they really know how to take care of the kiddos (and the mom's).

Hi MomtoMax, and welcome to HealingWell. Julie gave you a great website for parents of young ones, and I'm sure it will help. It's so hard to hear the babies going through this horrible stuff; and being Mom and watching is so tough. Take care, and remember how important it is to also take care of yourself....

I have no experience in that but I believe there are other preps that involve a lesser quantity of liquid. I don't know if they are appropriate for children though. Phosph-soda is what I had in mind. If they could use one with less liquid maybe you could ask if he try drinking it all first, and if he has no luck, then go for the tube. The only downside to that is if he can't drink all the liquid (which even us adults have some trouble with) he might view the tube as a punishment. I guess it would all be in how it is presented. I have no experience with the tube but my dad had one after surgery and he said it wasn't that bad.

Thank you. I am so happy I found this forum last night. I need to be connected to people that understand what we are going through. It has been a long road already and we don't have a diagnosis yet. I registered for Dragonpack and should be able to post there withing a day or so. Thanks again.

Hi momtomax,

My little bear(son) is 2 he was diagnosed in Apr with UC after his colonscopy, his prep consisted of 3 day prior to the colon of a liquid diet and the night before the test he was given fleet enema for kids. It was so much better than I thought it was going to be. I was sick to my stomach thinking I was going to have to give him the golightly. The test went well except for the dx. I'm still trying to learn and understand all this  the people on this board have been wonderful, I am also on dragonpack.com many more wonderful parents on there to. Hang in there happy you found this site :-) :-) :-) :-)
