My symptoms (severe lower abdominal pain, D, bloody bms, and general malaise) had diminished considerably until a couple of days ago.  Here on the Shore we were in the 5th day of a heat wave.  I was out running arrands and got very hot.  As soon as I got home I experienced sudden, sharp pains in my abdomen and began having bloody watery stools.  Since then (2 days) I am feeling worse by he day.  I have had serious flares before and I know that this is one. 

My question:  Could the stress of all that heat have triggered this flare?  I've never had one start so suddenly before.

I have no idea whether a flare can be triggered by a heat wave - however, I know that when I don't get enough sleep for a time, I can start to flare. I wonder whether the heat wave is keeping you from sleeping well and that is the cause. Of course, sometimes we can start to flare and no cause is apparent.

IMO-- yes, it can. Heat is one of the worst aggravants for me. Are you keeping well-hydrated? That's very important for UCers, especially when taking oral 5-ASAs. What about multivitamins? Make sure you're replacing potassium lost thru sweating. Hope you'll get back in control quickly. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Hey Old Hat...

No one said anything to me about having to drink more water/fluid taking Colazal.  What is the reason for this?  I am not a drinker - have been taking these pills for like three weeks - no problem with about 4 glasses of some kind of liquid with no caffeine - water, milk, juice, etc. in a day.  I do not have diarrhea so don't lose any extra fluid there and I NEVER sweat because I stay inside with AC. 

Just wondered how important it is!

Are you stressed out because of the heat? Stress is a huge trigger for me. It can come out of an instant if I am feeling super stressed all of the sudden. Anyhow, I hope you feel better soon. I also hope for a cold front! I hate the heat and I hate summer. Aren't I the complainer? lol.....I love air conditioning.

You might be right Old Hat - I might have gotten dehydrated on Sunday. My troubles started on Monday. Thanks to all of you for the support. I called my GI and he is starting me on Flagyl. Blood work to be done tomorrow. Hope something works because I am feeling awful.

I know heat can affect my digestive system horribly, whether I am in a flare or not. It will give me D.

A lack of sleep over a course of a week will almost always initiate a flare. Sometimes the flare takes hold, and sometimes it settles after I get enough sleep.
