since i found that article that said if you have intestinal problems you will see teeth marks along the sides of your tongue even if its not swollen Ive been looking at mine and it DOES have teeth marks along the side. 

Can anyone humor me and tell if you also have the teeth marks ? seem health family members around here do not have the indentation along the sides of the tongue.

I've had constant crohn's for 17 yrs with no full remission, but I don't have teeth marks along (or anywhere) the side of my tounge.

hmmm well maybe that doesnt prove trur then. Its interesting though. We will see if anyone else notices it on thier tongue . I wouldnt really have noticed it if i hdnt looked in the mirror after reading about it.

slight indentations barely visible.
i thought it was the way my tongue sat in my mouth or something.

I do, and on my cheeks as well.

I also have something my dentist called a "geographical tongue"... I just looked it up and here's what it says:

Geographic tongue is characterized by multiple irregularly shaped red patches on the top of the tongue. The condition describes tongue patches which exhibit a geographic, map-like appearance. The patches may have sharp distinct grey-white borders. Over time, they move around and sometimes completely disappear for varying periods.

Geographic tongue is also known as benign migratory glossitis. Benign because it's harmless, migratory because it moves around the tongue, and glossitis because the tongue appears inflamed. In reality the term is a misnomer. The appearance is actually caused by elongated lingual (tongue) papillae (protuberances enclosing the taste buds) which may be an intermittent source of food entrapment. This explains the changes in position of the patches and, possibly, a mild inflammation of the papillae.

If patches should appear atypical, particularly if raised or hard, they should be seen by a dental professional and biopsied when indicated.

maybe its only when the colon is acting up or inflammed so if so it could give me some warning of when Im going to have a flare up .

Maybe some peoples teeth actually press against the toungue and others don't going by the results on this page?

maybe thats true. I never knew the tongue was related but when this all started I had told my dr about hte swollen tongue and they had done blood tests etc........ now months later I find i do have Uc so maybe the tongue issue was trying to tell me something ? I have no explaination for it . I dont have the tongue swelling issues now but I do have the marks on the side. it might or might not be an indicator of whats going on with my infamation but i think Ill keep and eye on it and see if I notice any changes.

I saw my colonoscopy pics at the dr yesterday. wierd. I can see the infamation hes talking about but I want to find a pic of a healthy colon to see the difference.

I don't have them and my colon and anus are inflammed (as always) and the tounge is a part of the GI tract and with having CD as I do I could see it being normal if I did have it but having CD and not having the teeth marks seems like there actually may be no connection to the link you found.

maybe if the Uc is under control there are no marks? Anyone flaring up ? maybe they could check thiers?
or maybe its totally a myth who knows. Probably nothing but it was interesting anyway.

mom4321, if you look on google or yahoo images for "colonoscopy pictures" you should be able to find some pictures of healthy colons. I looked it up after mine too, to see how different my colon looked compared to the healthy ones... I was able to see what they meant by "loss of normal vascular pattern" because the healthy colons looked all veiny and mine is completely smooth, no evidence of veins whatsoever, and just covered with scars on the parts that weren't inflammed, and red splotches all over the inflamed parts.

I have slight indentations, but I think mine are because I bite on the sides of my tongue a lot (a bad habit). Also, I think my tongue just lies in my mouth that way. I'm curious why having inflammation in the colon would make your tongue have teeth marks on it...did the site say why?

I think it said it was just a sign of colon problems and inflamation in the intestines.
I think there was a link in an earlier post to one of the articles.

Maybe the inflammation would cause our tongues to be slightly inflamed as well which would make it 'bigger' and then press on our teeth?? Since I have the 'migratory glossitis' as well I would assume this would be the case for me anyway since there is obvious inflammation there. Hmm..
