A possible new treatment?

This follows on from another post but thought it deserved a new one

http://www.newtreatments.org/ga.php?linkid=1 click on the double blind trial at the bottom (ha ha) is a trial - looks to be funded by the company manufacturing the stuff but is it correct in saying a 100% remission rate within 3 weeks?

I was interested in it because (as i said in another post) I believe a member here found vitamin E enema's to help him greatly and both seem to work on the principle of being anti-oxidants

In a 1978 study at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, researchers concluded that DMSO brought significant relief to the majority of the 213 patients with inflammatory genitourinary disorders that were studied. They recommended DMSO for all inflammatory conditions not caused by infection or tumor in which symptoms were severe or patients failed to respond to conventional therapy.
Some people report an onion- or garlic-like taste after touching DMSO. (Onion and garlic also derive their stinginess from sulfoxides syn-propanethial-S-oxide and allicin.) In the medical field DMSO is predominantly used as a topical analgesic[6], a vehicle for topical application of pharmaceuticals, as an anti-inflammatory[7] and an antioxidant[citation needed]. It has been examined for the treatment of numerous conditions and ailments. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved DMSO usage only for the palliative treatment of interstitial cystitis. Medicinal-grade DMSO for this purpose is manufactured by Insource, Inc. under the name RIMSO.

Ian,

I would look for more current research information on DMSO. People have died from taking it; it somehow negatively affects the heart. The deaths have been since this research was done. I am not advising you not to try it but be careful with dosage.

I've done abit more digging but only came up with one reported death from a woman and the cause was unknown though she was taking DMSO at the time - from the numbers of people (and animals) using it this would seem rare but there again who wants to die.... Do you know when the UC trial was written?

If nothing else the proposed harber weiss reaction is certainly interesting and makes me wonder -is the tissue damage caused by the OH radicals this may tie up with hydrogen peroxide being able to cause acute ulcerative colitis and additionally the damage could be reduced or eliminated by most anti-oxidants....

When I do heavy exercise I always get worse the day or 2 after and have always wondered why - this bit of an article may explain it basically exercise produces oxidants and of interest hydrogen peroxide (used to produce colitis in rats I believe) and hydroxyl radicals are specifically mentioned - could this be why I feel worse? I'm interested to try loads of anti-oxidants before my next race and see if it helps I'm also taking quite a lot of vitamin E at the moment so we'll see how that goes...
