what does this diagnosis mean??

Chnaged the GI last month. They requested the biopsy slides from the previous doctor/lab. Today when i got the copy of the report it said "Chronic Colitis identical to Ulcerative Colitis, extent and distribution unknown." Can anyone help me understand what this means?? I am confused. I thought that UC is a chronic form of colitis?? Any ideas..clues..

I suspect it means the slides looked like UC but because the doctor didn't actually do the colonoscopy and see what was going on, he doesn't want to give a definite diagnosis and has no way of knowing first hand how bad the colon looks or how much is affected. He may want to do a new colonoscopy before too long, just to be sure what he's treating.
