Just when I am starting to do better, another abscessed tooth

     I must live under a black cloud or something.  I am tapered down to 20 mgm of prednisone, GI doctor increased the 6MP to 75 mgm last week.  My bowel movements are finally normal and ..WHAMMO....my second abscessed tooth in one month's time.  Last month my dentist did a root canal and placed a cap on.  This one is a wisdom tooth.  NOW I have to take 1000 mgm of Cipro (and we all know what that is gonna do).  My GI doctor said to take Flagyl while on Cipro and make sure I take my probiotic too  (I take that all the time anyway).  Along with all the other meds listed below.  SHHEEESH!  We are scheduled for a two week camping trip up in Hershey, PA leaving this Sunday.  I am scheduled to have that wisdom tooth removed Oct 27th.  Now I am scared.  Hope the Cipro and Flagyl keep the infection from spreading.  Otherwise, I feel good.

     Any advice out there?  I am having an oral surgeon pull the tooth.  Anyone have any teeth issues out there while on prednisone?  The nurse at my GI doctor's office said it is quite common to suffer gum infections while on prednisone.  I know it is true in my case.  Four years ago, while on prednisone, I had another abscessed wisdom tooth, which had to be pulled when the infection subsided.

Try doubling up on your probiotic, and be sure to take it at least two hours (preferably three) after your last dose of antibiotic.

Prednisone leaches calcium from your bones, also your teeth and the bones that support them. It also makes you more susceptible to all kinds of infections.

I talked my dentist into giving me the z-pack because it is only a five-day course, but I've also taken Cipro in the past without too many problems. 'Cillins, 'cyclines and 'mycins are the ones that kill me.

I got lucky on my wisdom teeth. Nothing ever prompted them to come out necessarily. Finally around 27 or so, my dentist just said it was time. An x-ray revealed I only had 3 wisdom teeth. Dont ask me why-I truly beleive my body is some sort of science experiment. Anyways, got em yanked and never missed em.

On a side note though, I did have a nasty abcess tooth when I was 18 (long before I got UC). It hurt like hell. The popped the top to relieve the pressure, then root canaled it a month later.

     Okay, thanks Judy, I didn't know that.  I presently take Powerdolphilus, which I ordered from iherb.com.  It says to take with food and I also have to take my antibiotic with food..lol.  I'll be eating all day with all these meds which say to take with food.  I am just concerned because the dentist has me taking the Cipro for a week and I am not scheduled to undergo the extraction until the 27th.  Hope in the meantime the abscess doesn't return.

Your cipro should keep the pain from your abscess at bay for a few weeks, but you may want to bring pain meds with you on your trip just in case it starts hurting again. As long as you've taken your whole dose of antibiotics, you needen't worry too much about a spreading infection prior to the end of this month.

If you're on regular prednisone it can aggravate periodontal disease. As long as you're getting regular care from the dentist though, that can be easily managed.

I've always had teeth issues but I don't think mine is due to anything other then just bad teeth. I joke that by the time I die, I will still have all my teeth because they'll all be porcelain! But I just wanted to comment on the wisdom tooth removal. I had 2 pulled in the beginning of the year. Are you being sedated? I think with you being on pred right now that it should be ok but when I had mine pulled the oral surgeon had to give me steroids with my IV because I was on steroid enemas within a year of extraction. It had something to do with stress on your body and adrenal gland function. But double check on that. You know, I have never had any abcesses but I have had a number of other tooth related ailments - so you have my sympathy! Keep your chin up and maybe that dark cloud will go away soon!

I actually have an absess right now. Dentist said Id had to get root canals on all 4 front teeth but he only did one big tooth and the one beside that. Ive had this "Absess" for a few years. No antibiotic on this planet will get rid of it. Having the canals made it a lot smaller but its still there. Mom suggested that it might be an ulcer..but when it pops yucky foul smelling yellow stuff comes out so i dont think its an ulcer.
Good luck with the absess. There a pain in the butt =(

Ugh! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! I've been dealing with some dental issues too. A course of penicillin sent me into a flare! Just weeks after getting over another flare :( My GI's office told me that I should be back to "normal" within 3-4 days of being off the antibiotics. WRONG! It took reading a bunch of posts and finding one Judy wrote about staying on double probiotics for a MONTH after being off of antibiotics for me to get back of a semi-normal state.

Hang in there! I hope you get to enjoy your trip :)
