I f you can find a progressive GI, that would be fantastic. But I have to say, I have found GI's, compared to most other specialties, extremely conservative and behind the times as regards new developments. So I think the wisest thing to do is to find an internist or general practitioner who is both an MD and an alternative practitioner (the type that does acupuncture, herbs, vitamin supplement therapies etc) in one, and work with both the mainstream GI and the alternative guy so that the treatments complement each other. Use the alternative guy to probe into alternative or cutting edge therapies (as well as tests that your GI will probably refuse to prescribe) if you feel comfy trying them, and use the mainstream GI for your hard core allopathic treatments, endoscopy, meds, etc.. Keep both of them in the loop. In major cities you can find an alternative doc who is an MD, but most alternative practitioners are not MD's and if worst comes to worse, you can deal with a naturopathic practitioner, ND, but the GI will dismiss them and they can't prescribe you much.
To find the alternative docs, google acupuncture or natural medicine, as well as the various associations they are members of, and you should stumble on some find a doc sites for those types. Hopefully some of them will have an MD after their name.
