just got back from the gi app. he is putting me on pentasa 500mg twice a day i think i havent gotten it filled it.has anyone had any luck with this med.? and he wants to do complete blood work which i'm ok with that,but i was wondering why would he want to do a stool culture?i never had to have that done,just curious as to what this would be for.

Culture may be to check for pesky parasites -- or maybe unusual levels of bacteria? For most it would be to check for blood, but we already know the answer to that.
Blood work can reveal deficiencies, it's good to get that done.

     My GI doctor had me take a stool sample over to the lab a few years back.  Yes, it is for parasites and bacteria.  It was negative.

Often they are looking for C-Diff---which they would treat with Flagyl instead of more UC drugs. They need 3 samples over 3 days to confirm this when you go into the hospital. Most UC patients are put on "contact", which is a nice private room, till they are sure it is not some contagious condition. Not sure how many samples when you are an out patient.
