Hi everybody. I was on a 3-day course of Bactrim for a urinary tract infection this week. I had never had a UTI before, so that was fun...heh. Anyway, my gut seemed to behave itself much better while I was on Bactrim. My doctor said it is used for bowel infections, like "traveler's diarrhea," in addition to things like UTIs. Anyone else ever been on this and have a similar experience?

Of course, it could have just been a coincidence, since it was only 3 days. =)

I was recently on Bactrim for about 5 weeks for a MRSA infection. I also did very well while I was on it.

Bactrim contains sulfa which is also one of the main ingredients used in treating Uc. So I can see how this one antibiotic would be of benefit to Uc as well as the UTI. I, unfortunately, found out the hard way that Bactrim contained sulfa. I had a UTI and my doc prescribed it. I ended up in such severe pain that I had to stop it before the course was up. Later when I told the doc about it, I found out that it contained sulfa - which I am highly allergic to!

Years ago I had a similar experience, my UC improved while this antibiotic was taken for an unrelated infection. I asked my Doc who was not my GI to prescribe a further course just for my UC.  He did this but alas it proved  ineffective for UC when I tried it the second time. The colon is a very complex organ with a vast array of resident bacteria, thus we stumble along and try various treatments hoping to find something that works for our unique system.

Red - That totally sucks. Your doctor should have asked if you had a sulfa allergy before prescribing it.

Interesting that it didn't work for you the second time, rdm. Yes, the colon is very complex, to a frustrating point sometimes. haha.

tjf - Is your MRSA infection cleared up now?
