Prilosec (Omeprazole) - anyone use it?

I am out of the hospital, and my doctor gave me Prilosec (Omeprazole). I am still waiting to see if the blood will go away. Anyone have any experience with this drug?

I've been on Prilosec for over a year now. It is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) and is used for acid reflux. Are you having issues with reflux? Or a hiatal hernia?

     Prilosec is for upper gastric distress.  While on prednisone my GI doctor prescribed Nexium for me.  I no longer have to take it.

My husband and I both take Prilosec prescription for GERD - gastro reflux.  Took it long before diagnosed with UC.  My husband takes it to counteract acid reflux from medication for lung disease.  Works perfect for me.

As far as I know, I do not have any reflux. However, since I have been on it since yesterday, my stomach has been grumbling. Today's stools were light and white, but they were more liquid than anything else. It was hard to see if it was a real stool or not. Do you get this from this drug usually?

I have never had any colon or stool symptoms from Prilosec - just less acid reflux.  By the way, my husband was diagnosed with acid reflux but never has/had heartburn in his life.  It can be silent but will harm your esophagus.  Ask you doctor why he prescribed it.

What are your symptoms of reflux? I do not even think I have any.

     My GI doctor said prednisone could cause stomach ulcers, therefore prescribed the Nexium for me.  Do you get any heartburn, regurgitation?

As far as I know, I do not have any heartburn or regurgitation. However, what I am seeing now is mucous or light brown liquid bowel movements. They are sort of thick. They do not smell like feces, but the gas with them does.

Call the doctor and clarify why you are put on Prilosec.

It's a proton pump inhibitor, to lessen the acid in the stomach to help prevent damage to the stomach lining if you have ulcers there or to lessen the erosion of the esophagus if you have reflux. Prednisone increases the acidity in the stomach because it's a systemic medication and is dissolved in the stomach.

It will not lessen UC bleeding ... which is in the colon.

It does have side effects, however....I didn't feel good while I used it, felt kind of "spacey"...I stopped using it.

Call the doctor.

You could/should consider to ask the doctor for rectal meds to help with rectal inflammation..

Wow, quincy, never heard anyone say that a

proton pump inhibitor caused any side effects especially feeling "spacey".  You learn something new every day!  I have taken Prilosec or Nexium for years and would hate to live without it - even bread or crackers were giving me heartburn - I can eat most everything now.
