Hi everyone,

I am new to this site and have learned so much in the last couple days of reading.  I was wondering if anyone has been on Lialda for an extended period of time.  I was diagnose with UC in 2005.  I have been in remission with only a couple of flares. I tried Colasal, Pentasa, and was on Prednisone for 2 short periods.  I am currently taking 2 Lialda each day and am able to eat pretty much what I want. I feel good and have a good amoiunt of energy.  Since Lialda is relatively new I wanted to know how it is working for others - duration, experiences, etc. Thanks!

So, I have been on the same dose as you for over a year now. I can say at least for myself I have been pretty fortunate on Lialda. Of course I get my flares but mine usually last 2 or 3 weeks max. I am Pro biotics and those are helping stay in remission. I have not had any side effects from Lialda so hopefully it stays that way. My energy is relatively good and I can hit the gym hard no problem. I am glad it is working for you. Keep up the remission, good luck, theklep.

Lialda seems to be doing its job as a maintenance drug with almost no side-effects. The only times I flare up is when I'm not taking the mesalamine compound so it's essential to take it everyday since the benefits outweigh any possible side-effects. Also, in terms of energy I feel more fatigued than the average person would and I'm not sure if it's the lialda or just a weaker colon in general.

Also if you get into a mild-flare, instead of taking prednisone as the first resort your GI may double the dose of lialda to 4 a day to control it (if he doesn't then you should at the least suggest it).

Right now I am only taking the Lialda and a multivitamin. When i did have a flare this summer my GI ran some bloodwork and just had me ride it out. I was OK after a couple of weeks. I am not familiar with the mesalamine compoud or the pro biotics mentioned above.

oh Lialda/Colazal/Asacol all contain mesalamine which is the main agent used to control the inflammation. Probiotics are the "good" bacteria that we take through supplements such as yogurt which aid in digestion.

Got ya. I thought by "compound" you were taking a combination of mesalamines or something. I think I did the probiotics in the beginning. I'm thinking I might also add the fish oil, too. It seems that many of the people here take it.

I've been taking 4 Lialda a day for more than a year. No side effects. I tolerated Asacol and Colazal quite well also. The nice thing about Lialda is it's once a day. I am jealous you can stay in remission on just a couple of Lialda a day! I was in a flare for nearly two years and was about to agree to surgery when the Remicade infusions finally got me into remission.

Both Lialda and Asacol cause fatigue in me, as well as a mild rash on my legs and headaches, but both drugs also keep my UC under control to point, which is why I'm still taking them. I keep thinking that there is a drug that won't have annoying side-effects in me, so I'm going to be trying something new soon, but I'm not sure what at this point. For those who tolerate 5-ASAs, they are good maintenance drugs. Adding a probiotic is also really helpful.
