So we were going to be flying to Ga for the holidays tomorrow, but suddenly my DH was told he has Diverticulitis and probably shouldn't fly. Well...we decided to drive instead. Driving from Tx to Ga is a 13 hr drive... so I was thinking of solutions for next time this happens...

I have a portable potty at the back of my car, altought I've never used it, I've only used it several times as a cooler for the beach, lol

     I have 3 portapots.  I also take one along when we go on long trips.

So...would you pull off to the side of the road and go, where?  Outside the car, or try to go inside the car?

Has anyone ever had to use this?  How did you manage?

wondered that myself Joylu... as I drive a pickup truck with bucket seats, figured thiswould have to happen alongside the road. Can't see using this inside the truck.....????

This one seems like it would be more practical for adults, at least you could sit on it without it collapsing! I like the idea of these too:

sweetmelody, why was he told he shouldn't fly?? What about diverticulitis makes a 13 hour drive better than a short flight? I don't know anything about diverticulitis so I'm just curious :)

I think a great invention would be a sanitary lower cushion replacement of your drivers seat of your car....still looks the same, but unzip the cover and there is a flushable toilet in there with possibly a small pull-around privacy skirt or something - great way to crap in traffic... here in the boonies, a quick jaunt into the woods is no problem....but in traffic - i can almost have a full-blown panic attack! when done, flush, sanitize, and zip up seat...no sweat. Multi-function drivers seat....built in relief toilet for emergencies....

     Had to use it only once on the way to our daughter's house.  Hubby couldn't pull over, so I slipped into the back (thank God our windows are all shaded) and used the portapot...it almost tipped over as he was rounding a bend but I managed to hang on to the back of his seat...lol.  What a joy!

I have a port-o-potty and it's great (well better than nothing that's for sure) I bought a minivan and took the very back bench seats out so I can walk from the front of the van to the back (as the seats right behind the driver seats are split) with no having to pull over unless I'm driving of course but thankfully that hasn't happend...I've only used it when hubby is driving and it sure has come in handy. Living in cold wintery canada I couldn't imagine pulling over and "going" outside BRRRRRR LOL.

I'm also curious why he couldn't fly! I thought the symptoms were very similar for UC and Crohns. I have kept a trash can w/ a trash bag in my car as an emergency potty but never used it. I have pulled over to go #1 on the side of the highway but never #2. The biggest problem is staying covered and not going on your clothes. Skirts are a lot easier than pants! And pb4- we recently were out of power for awhile and my hubby was just going #1 outside. BRRRRR I couldn't imaging. I would go and just not flush before I would go outside in this cold. But, my dog does it lol.

to be 100% honest with you, however uncivilized this may sound, i am more comfortable going outside along the highway in the woods than in some of the filthy restroom stops, thats for sure! nothing more clean than nature itself.... i like the trashbag idea....good piece of mind in an emergency....better than soiling ones pants for sure.

wow those bags look nice... I think I might be buying them soon, the toilet is too big, good for camping trips.

The doctor said that if he could jump up and down without it hurting or if he didn't have a fever he could fly, but jumping up and down really hurt him and he had a lowgrade fever. I think it has something to do with the air pressure and it making the pain worse... but I am not sure he even has Diverticulitis either...he's only 26 and most have it after 40. He was referred to a GI and will be going on the 6th.
