College Housing + UC Rant

The housing and financial aid departments used to get on my nerves. I used to get so sick of being told you need to talk to this person. And then that person, and that one. Its like they had some twisted form of musical chairs that usually spanned weeks at a time. It makes you wonder why they have so many people doing the same job but nothing seems to get done until you play their little games.

Went back to school part time myself... Have been enjoying it and have been doing well in my classes, then this lovely disease hit. Am currently not going back this coming semester because my GI has been making remicade noises and didn't figure I needed to juggle a full time career, this disease, and remicade as well as classes. But I understand where you are coming from. Last semster when this flare was at its worst I checked into a close parking spot. Was told I qualified. But since I pull a small trailer for my daily job there was no place close to the building for me to park. Consequently I had to park almost a mile away from the building and any bathroom. Now you can understand this... I leave the house at 7:30, drive an hour to campus then walk a mile at 8:30 in the morning when all this "potty" trips are happening. I started carryin a backpack just to carry extra pants and underwear for when I finally made it to the building. Was quite embarrassing and decided I didn't want to have to put up with it again until I was in remission. My campus told me they would give me a handicap sticker but that would mean no trailer and no work then. Oh well.... ANd worst part of it wa the Have a proffessor lot that is a less than 40 yards to the building and It is neve even a third full and I couldn't park there.
So yeah I feel your pain.

I shouldn't even matter what time of the year it is. Many kids transfer in and out during semesters. If you feel like they didn't make you a reasonable accommodation then chew their ***** out. If they don't attempt to make a reasonable accommodation they can get into a LOT of trouble. Even if they can't get you a single then at least a room near a toilet. That's what I'm doing for my upcoming semester. I was just talking to my mom and she said come Jan 1st the disability laws are being widened and it will cover more diseases and illnesses than ever so you've got the right to be mad. We were talking about your situation and even she is mad! lol I would call disability services and housing and get this straightened out. This is way more stress than you should have to deal with! Let us know how it goes!

Disability services is closed this week so I ended up calling the Assistant Director of housing. He said that when he made the housing assignment, he hadn't realized that I was on the disability list, so he just put me in a room. He said he'll change it by Friday, so we'll see how that goes.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised about this. At my school, the entire administration--whether it's housing, financial aid, parking, etc.--is completely incompetent.

The single room is actually a double room with a private bathroom, but since I have a medical reason I can pay a little extra and get that room for myself.

I don't want to explain to a roommate why I have to wake up at 7 to use the bathroom 5 times before my class at 9 or why I need to sleep so much or why I take so many pills. No one outside of my family knows about my UC, and I want to keep it that way.

I ended up getting a single room with a private bathroom! It's on the other side of campus from my classes, but it's better than nothing.
