How many smokers ?

It would be interesting to know if there are any smokers in this group?

maybe a stab in the dark but i would say none, please post if you smoke or not it will be interesting,

I have read that smokers do not get UC. I am a non smoker. Thinking of taking it up! Then I can trade my UC for lung cancer!!

Desert dancer, smoking is not the answer and you do not want to make that trade !!
it has been said that nicotine patches have been given out or have been looked into, could someone confirm this or blow the myth out of the water.

Desert - I am a smoker and I got UC. It is less likely for smokers to get UC (and more likely for them to get Crohn's), but I guess it didn't work that way for me. Yes, nicotine patches have been shown to help in one study. If you google search "nicotine patches" and "ulcerative colitis" you should find the study.

It isn't that smokers "don't get" UC, but that statistically fewer smokers get UC than non-smokers. Also, it often appears after people stop smoking. We have had a number of people here go back to smoking, with about 50-50 results. Some have improved UC symptoms, others don't. I've seen no information suggesting that UCer's who have never smoked gain any benefit from smoking. And I think most who have tried the patches have not benefitted. There are some experts who suggest it's the carbon monoxide from cigarettes that has the effect rather than the nicotine.

At any rate, what's worse than uncontrollable D. ten times a day? Uncontrollable D and having to drag an oxygen tank with you every time you go into the bathroom.

Thanks Sara, for the link to the study. I find it interesting. It helped some and not others, but for those it helped, I imagine it was worth it. I'm wondering what second hand smoke does. Heading to Vegas tomorrow, and I'm sure I'll get a steady dose of that!

Not a smoker, but i do use copenhagen so I get my nictotine that way..... UC showed up after I had cut way back on the amount i was chewing. Not sure if theres a link there or not. I am now using the same amount as I have for years and the UC is still here.
