This is a great topic indeed. A good question was asked and there's a good discussion going. Also it's nice to debate and chat with people who I have something familiar with...
I have always had cats. I currently have 2 indoor, 1 part time indoor/outdoor, and 1 temporary outdoor until we find him a good home. We also have a Lab/Pitt Bull mix. He *loves* cats. He washed them and protects them. The oldest cat I ever had(20 yrs old) had UC. He passed away a few years ago, but he lived a very long life.
I used to be severely allergic as a child, but I started taking allergy shots for a few years and have never had a reaction since.
Only 1 cat is allowed upstairs and the other one stays downstairs since she uses my area rugs as her extra potty place. Nasty! The reason pregnant women are not allowed near cat feces is due to a parasite that cats can carry called Coccidia. The vet can prescribe a pill that will take care of those. Mine are free of this parasite. They've all been tested.
For almost 10 years I worked in pet stores. For about
6 of those years, the job included cleaning sal***er aquariums. I touched all sorts of yucky things and the only reaction I ever had was the occasional rash on my upper arms from the rim of the aquariums. I touched live anemones, dead anemones, live fish, dead fish, all sorts of corals except the fire coral(most people break out from touching them...they didn't get that name for nothing), etc. I never felt that the marine life caused my UC.
Quincy.... You're too funny! Cats are an acquired taste. I couldn't imagine my life without one. My best cat is my youngest who follows me around and lays in bed with me. I didn't get a dog until 2 years ago(this summer) and he's taken a while for me to really get used to... Dogs are disgusting. They eat anything they find on the ground. It's taken some work to get him to stop dining from the cat box. :o I still can't get him to stop eating deer pellets from the yard.
