Travelling with Rowasa

I have travelled a lot but since I have crohns and not UC I have never had enemas but have had creams. There is now a special line for people with medical liquids and families. That means a lot of people in your line are probably traveling w/ something embarassing. I know others on here have checked them (under the plane) but I always take all my meds on the plane with me.

At most airports you pass a checkpoint before you actually get to the person running the machines. I would tell the officer at the checkpoint that you have a medical condition, have liquid medicines, and wish to have your bag hand checked in private rather than shipping it down the conveyer belt. They will probably call an officer over and take you aside or into a seperate room where you can show them the enemas (better than showing the whole line). Then they will check the rest of your back out and you will be on your way.

Or - you can think about the fact that you will never see these people again - the people in line are strangers. So - you can just go w/ the cattle call and at your turn drop your enemas in the little bin and walk through without a word. Pick em back up and drop em back in your bag. If you are asked any questions just say "prescription medicine." That way you "declared" them but didn't say it out loud.

Let me know what you decide and how it works!! I once went through w/ butt cream in my purse and had totally forgot it was there. They pulled it out and as soon as they realized what it was dropped it back in and said "sorry, go ahead." It was my fault for not declaring it but they seemed more embarassed than I was.

One word of caution: I flew last Saturday and my body wash was all pressurized. I opened it and it squirted everywhere (like soda). You might want to let some air out before shooting a pressurized enema up your butt :P

I travel alot for work and personally (I work for an airline - in IT though not a flight attendant :) ). You can go right through the normal security line with the enemas. I've brought 7 of them through security before with no issues. I always stick the prescription sheet from the pharmacy in the baggie with them just so I don't have to explain if they would ever ask. But you shouldn't need to do that to take them through. There is no limit on liquid prescriptions that you can take through security. They do not have to be in the quart-sized baggie either (although it makes it easier). Don't worry about any embarassment. If anything, once they see what it is they won't want to ask you any questions anyway. ;)
Also no need to worry about anything happening to them on the plane. There is enough air left in the enema (as you may have noticed already when taking them) that they won't explode.

But if you do feel like checking them, I've done that as well. I went on a 10 day vacation to Hawaii last year and took 2 boxes of them with me (I always like to bring extra just in case something happens). I didn't want to carry all of that on the plane so I put them in my checked suitcase. No worries, but if you want to be safe just stick the whole 7-enema box of them in your luggage. That way you know for sure they won't get damaged since they are still in the package they came in from the pharmacy.

Thanks for all yor advice! I think I'm going to go the carrying on route. I'm just now starting to feel better (on the Rowasa) and I don't want to risk not having them on my trip!

I don't know how long your trip is, but if you need to take alot of them with you, you can always take a few days worth in your carry-on and just check the rest. That way even if the airline delays your luggage (which never happens, right? ;) you should have enough of the enemas to last till you get your luggage delivered to you.
