I've been on the diet for a couple of months and I'm feeling a heckuva lot better now. Thank you to Cfromutah for telling us about this.

I started the diet using canned spinach, and found it to be unappetizing. I switched to frozen chopped spinach and discovered it had a better consistency, and tasted a lot better as well. I know someone else suggested this before, but it takes a while to get into my thick skull sometimes.

Been on the diet for a few months too... I am tolerating the seeds well now. I think the diet is helping quite a bit. I suggest it to anyone who would like to give it a shot....it is worth a try.

here's a simple to make, yummy recipe.  I make it on the weekend, then eat a slice or two every day for breakfast during the week.  I've posted this one before, but for all the newcomers here it is again

Hello All,

Where you guys are getting sunflower seeds or paste?
How much quantity, do u take in terms of Spoons?
Can we get in Walmart kind of grocery store?
Please tell me the brand name for that you guys are trying and seeing positive results...
Please do let me know. Even i want to give a try..

I buy the David brand of sunflower seed kernels (without the shell) and eat about 3 - 4 handfuls a day.  I have been able to find these at Wal-Mart and all other grocery stores as well.  I have never tried the sunflower butter - I just eat organic peanut butter.  If you are trying this make sure to include spinach as well or other high mag foods.

FWIW, I have been eating tons of cooked frozen spinach since stumbling on this diet about a month and a half ago. So far I tolerate the spinach very well, which is interestng in light of the fact that magnesium supps have always flared me. However, the sunflower seed butter that I used instead of seeds was vicious on me- definitely flaring me up. I must be a freak, because everyone else seems to tolerate the stuff. I love the taste but it is clearly, like all nutbutters, intolerable for my UC gut. And I dare not try raw seeds- though it crosses my mind. Sunflower seed butter is, however, composed purely (well, the better brands) of ground up sunflower seeds so I don't see why raw seeds would be more benign. Has anyone tried this diet who cannot tolerate (in a sense of not flaring or having other worse UC symptoms) raw seeds managed to tolerate them over time? I am also thinking of trying supplements of whatever is missing (beta caroine?) by not having the sunfllower seeds part od the diet, while continuijgn to eat lots of spinach. It certainly isn't Magnesium, since that is abundant in spinach. Anyway, the diet has not had any impact on my UC whatsoever, but as I say, the sunflower seed part (at least in butter form) actually makes me worse so for now I am simply eating the spinach portion of the diet.

seeds and nuts are high in oil that might be what it is? or the harder fiber of the seeds might be bothering you.

Here's a good recipe that I tried the other day.

Dice up two or three pieces of bacon and fry them up, drain the bacon and the extra fat from the pan and add a cup of frozen spinach and stir that around until it starts to thaw, add the bacon back to it, season with salt and pepper and then throw it into a tortilla if you can eat them! If not you can add that to soup. Yum!

Wow - I should regulate my sunflower intake :) - I am eating an entire bag of David un-shelled kernels....freakin addicting...love the salt!!

Cfromutah... we never talked about what kind of seeds? I have been using Planters dry roasted sunflower seeds. Last night I bought a health store brand cause of price... Not really roasted... tasted fresh. Was fine this mornign after my taco hell trip, but started the new seeds late last night and this morning... then POW this afternoon was hell.. 3 or 4 trips to bathroom. and while Ihad no blood or such... felt like razor blades. Sorry if this is to graphic for some of you. I can't really blame this one the taco bell... I was doing to good this morn. ALmost have to blame this on the new sunflower seeds due to timing. Has anyone noticed a difference is seed brand or type? And may I email you on a different matter?

doooode....taco bell is harsh even on people w/o UC... i love it though!! i have had some lucky experiences there and didnt get major problems the next day, but usually I pay dearly for eating it....ha but sometimes its worth it...

i have had good luck with David shell-less kernel salted seeds... I really like the taste over the Planters dry roasted flavor... Sheetz carries them...

The seeds I usually buy are good sense brand roasted and salted seeds at Walmart but sometimes eat others too. Albertsons brand dry roasted, david brand oil roasted, archer farms brand from target etc.

honestly feel my problems this afternoon were the new seeds. Guess I will find out tomorrow. The seeds even tasted funny, probably cause the weren't as dry or salty. They just tasted different. weird even.

happyliving, I eat 4 to 7 handfuls a day of seeds. I Think the more the better so you can get plenty of the needed nutrients. Eat a fair amount of spinach too.

Probiotic - Sunbutter also has oil and sugar in it.  Maybe the sugar is bothering you?  Or maybe you have a mild nut allergy? 

Since those David's sunflower seeds are kind of expensive, I wanted to tell everyone that I found bulk sunflower seeds (roasted and salted and several other varieties) at my local ethnic supermarket.  You know the kind that sells foods from other countries that you can't find at regular supermarkets?  Mine is called Joe Caputto's Fruit Market.  Anyways, they're A LOT cheaper at these kind of places.

You can also buy bulk sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds at Whole Foods, or whatever your local hippy mart is (Food Co-ops, Sunflower Farmer's Market, Wild Oats, Vitamin Cottage, etc). They usually have both salted and unsalted. Those same stores will also carry Sunbutter.

Probiotic and Kiss520 - Sunbutter is supposedly made in a nut product free plant, so a nut allergy/intolerance shouldn't have any place in whether you can eat Sunbutter. If you have a food processor, try grinding up seeds into powder and adding it to other foods. That way you get the goods from the seeds without the pain of possibly passing a few whole ones!

megger - the Digestive Ad I take is a probiotic available at any drugstore - cvs, wallgreens etc.  It is kept near all the other "butt" products like stool softeners, diahrea remedies etc.

I buy the David brand mostly because it is all I can find near my home.  I will have to look into finding a health market for the bulk sunflower seeds.  I would like to find some without hydrogented oils.

carefull, I have always used the planters brand and have no problems. I switched to this health food store brand...and have had problems.
These almost taste raw... and leave a funny after taste. I actually quit using them today. Am going to go back to buying planters tomorrow. Have had another bad day on these seeds. and yes I am blaming the seads. Who knows maybe i got a bad batch. I just don;t like them and they don't seem to like me. Am going to pay a little more and make sure I get the kind that has been working. for the few extra cents, its worth it to me. Am also back to a full can of spinach, trying to make fix what this seed change has brought about. Hope I'm doing the right thing here.

i was thinking about starting a new thread for people who have had success with this diet. they can just leave one post with a short summary of their success. this way, people can see that it actually works for some of us. i just keep wondering if this will help all these people on the forums who have horrible symptoms but really feel like this won't do anything for them or get lost with the 5 or 6 posts we have on this whole diet!

I ordered some organic sunbutter and it just came in today. I will report back in and share if it's been good or bad for me. I'll probably have a few tablespoons of it a day as well as continue with the 5-6oz minimum of roasted & salted seeds and half can of spinach minimum per day. I started eating canned spinach this week instead of fresh. Somewhere along the lines I missed the whole "stay away from fresh spinach" thing b/c apparently it doesn't digest as well. So, I'm thinking the two weeks I put in to the diet haven't been very successful b/c I was eating the fresh spinach.

Alot of things in these threads get buried so I would suggest emailing Cfromutah if you have q's. He's been a good help to me so far, he responds quickly, and is detailed with his reply.

My annual time to flare is coming up soon and am going to try this diet for sure (along with my normal ceasar salad with extra garlic of course).  Maybe I should start now?

Is the issue with fresh spinach due to not being able to digest it or not absorbing the magnesium?  Because I would perfer fresh.

That's a national brand of probiotic, and not really a very good one, just a big company jumping on the probiotic fad. It won't hurt and might help people who just get a little colitis, but not us. In my opinion.
