alcohol during attacks?

Does alcohol make attacks worse?  thinking beer??

While I'm drinking, alcohol actually calms my colon but the next day I usually pay for it. I am a big wine drinker though so I just plan those days accordingly. If I have to do something the next day, I don't drink but if I know that I don't have to be anywhere (usually the weekends), I'll indulge. Everyone is different and the only way to know is to try.

Beer and wine in moderation doesn't bother me, but hard alcohol and too much wine always gives me lots of trouble.

I've been drinking Heineken lite which is supposed to be very low in gluten, if you have a gluten issue. There are wheat/gluten-free beers, but you can't usually get them in bars or restaurants (and they don't taste as good).

I found that beer doesn't affect me too much. But I had Grey Goose and Red Bull and that tore me up the next day. I'm thinking it was the Sucralose in it. I drank Grey Goose and OJ the next weekend and was fine. I just suggest trying it at home before you over-indulge out and about.

Well, as the others have said, everyone is different so you will have to find out for yourself. But for me, I have found alcohol of any kind to be the number 1 worst thing for my whole system, whether flaring or not.

I'm the same as ack2009 - alcohol is a definite no-no for me no matter what condition my colon is in!

It's not even worth the risk drinking during a flare up. Doesn't beer give you the craps already? Thats usually what it does to me and everybody else I know. If it upsets people who have normal stomach just imagine what it will do to use. Thats just the way I look at it. Maybe beer has some settling qualities to it but I doubt it.

     Glamorgirl....if you are on 6MP, the label states NOT to drink alcohol while on the drug.  I should talk...had a mudslide every night while in AC.  Three nights in a row..woo hooo!  Hope my liver is ok.

Beer is a no-no because of the carbonation - wine seems to be okay - but again in moderation

I was just about to make mention of this and then I saw this post. I had some wine last night and as soon as I could feel any effects on me I also noticed my bottom beginning to burn. I've never had any issue with it before. I've recently starting feeling better in just the past week. Better BMs and less bleeding with no mucous. After the wine(and I only had 2 glasses)I had to go to the bathroom right away and was totally cleaned out. I spent all day in bed exhausted with my bottom on fire. This sucks!

only causes the craps with me if i had WAY to much. LOL. and here again each of us would be different on what is way to much. Since UC I've been careful not to have WAY to much and have had no problems with "the craps". But before UC I had been known to have WAY to much on occassion. But as long as I go with moderation, I've been fine

The last two days I've had two (four total) Seagram's "malt liquor" drinks, you know, the girly wine coolers... at night when I've gotten home from work. I also had my 2nd remicade infusion on Thursday. My stomach hasn't been bothering me much but tonight I had to rush to the bathroom and when I went, blood just poured out, clots and everything. Little freaked out, haven't seen blood in about a week and that's the most I've seen in months. Wonder if it has something to do with the (small amount) of alcohol..

My GI said it was okay to have an occassional drink.  I actually have more than an occassional one though.  I was on 6MP for 2 1/2 years and drank every weekend and my labs for my liver always came back normal.  I stopped taking 6MP about a month ago so I could start on LDN.

about alcohol... I come from a family of Italians who love to have cocktails... specifically wine and beer. I'm 29 years old and was just recently diagnosed with UC in November of 08. I had symptoms for over a year but ignored them. I thought it was hemmoroids!! How stupid, I know! I used to enjoy drinking a lot on the weekends and a couple or so glasses during the week. I'm really afraid of drinking any more than that now. I so far have not had any issues with just a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of beers. Christmas eve was the one time I drank too much but I was in a flare-up. I paid dearly.... thankfully I was still taking the steroid enemas at that time so the steroids calmed my colon when I got home and was in miserable pain. I would think that these days while I'm in remission, it wouldn't have bothered me so bad. I'm thankful to have found a forum where you can actually talk to others who 'GET IT'. Thanks for the posts... I look forward to learning more from you all! wink

That's what happens with me if I have hard liquor, even just a splash or two. 

I see lots of red blood, even if I had been doing well. 

It does seem silly that we can't get by without having an alcoholic drink in certain environments. But it is what it is.

I have never completely stopped drinking but I definitely keep it to a minimum if I am flaring badly. I also try to avoid yeasty beverages like beer moreso than liquor. I don't like to use sugary mixers. Usually ill have a vodka martini or something along those lines. Lately I have been feeling okay & I have been drinking beer and wine more.

I can have an occasional 3-4 drinks on a Friday or Saturday.  It has to be a heineken product.  Sometimes, after my first drink have a an urge to go, but after the first it's fine...the next day is usually never that bad. 

I definitley can;t drink like I used to...

I usually drink red wine but will have have few beers once in a while.  My beer of choice used to be Stella, but can't anymore because it makes me go...  I too drink  Heineken and I have no problem with it. The other beer that seems ok for me is Coors Light. Drinking less then before may be a good thing... tongue  

Diagnosed with Pancolitis February 2008

Meds.  Asacol 800mg X 3/Day

Flare ups: prednisone from 40mg for 7 days, 30mg/7 days etc...

Vit. D and calcium.

Am doing so much better now... Have switched from NO gluten to LOW gluten. I've found I can drink my favorite bud lite again. Still keep it to moderation. And still lean toward heineken lite... but have drank a few budlites on a regular basis lately with no ill side effects.....

Alcohol in general is hard on the colon, so I'd be leary...just heard on the news the other day the research has shown that alcohol can slightly increase the risk of cancer specifically for women and the GI tract especially the rectom was noted, there's something to think about.
