Asacol and Kidney Problems

I was just reading that people on Asacol should have their kidneys tested.  Does anyone know what kidney problems this medication can cause?

My Mom and Dad both were diagnosed with kidney cancer.  My Mom passed away 2 years ago from kidney cancer.  My Dad, thank God, is so far a cancer survivor. 

My concern is with my genetic risk of kidney cancer how concerned should I be taking Asacol?

I think that the issues would be separate...but creatinine levels should be checked if one is on 5ASA meds, regardles...that and of course liver enzyme levels.

There are also some cancer marker tests that you could have checked if you're concerned. Now, not all positive markers state one has cancer, as do a negative marker state one doesn't. They are helpful in diagnosis, or to alert if other tests would have to be done.

Have you done any research into the causes of kidney cancer? You might be able to get in with the doctors who have dealt with your parents to possibly do some tests to help in your worries.

If you haven't had any kidney enzyme tests done as of yet, you should enquire about it to your GI.

My Dad was a smoker but quit when I was very young.  My MOm never smoked, drank or anything else that would be harmful. 

I do have a CT scan of my kidneys on a regular basis.  When I went for my CT scan at the beginning of Januray when I was so sick and in so much pain they checked them again and that is when they suspected the UC and sent me to a GI. 

Thanks for the link to the article.  I will check it out.  I go back to the GI thursday to get the results of the colonoscopy.  I don't know what else will happen at that appointment.  I am on Asacol and Rowasa.  I was feeling better but the last two days have been awful.  Pain and numerous trips to the bathroom again.  So, I'm not sure what he will do about that when I go Thursday or if I should call today and let him know what is going on.  Any opinions?
