Does anybody know how they diagnose how severe your UC is? If the colon looks different when they look at it, how do they know if you are severe, or moderate or mild. I had a colonoscopy 1 and 1/2 months after the worst part of my flare when most of my symptoms had improved. I'm wondering if I really do have mild UC.

My doctor doesn't put much stock in the "mild, moderate, or severe" stuff, mostly because it really depends on when the colonoscopy is done how bad the colon looks. He basically said that colitis is colitis is colitis and that the symptoms a person is experiencing really doesn't seem to correlate with how extensive or bad the inflamation is.

That make more sense.

My GI never used mild, moderate or severe. He did say though that my colon was "ulcerated" which meant he didn't see full blown ulcers. I never bled so I guess that makes sense. I would say mine was probably moderate. I had pretty bad D and cramping but never blood.

I have been all over the board, mild, moderate to severe. When I am in the mild phase, my colon just looks a bit red when I had a scope but with severe, I had very
open ulcers with active "pussing" and bleeding.

So I guess its more a diagnosis of the current condition. I would like to believe that mild is what I could expect in the future. Maybe that is unreasonable. Thank you for the replies, it is very helpful!
