Slippery elm

You can take slippery elm long term. it is pretty much a food rather than a medicine. slippery elm provides mucelage (spelling?) - basically it coats the lining of you digestive tract to help it heal. You will notice that if you make slippery elm tea it is kind of slimy - that is what makes it useful. I make tea regularly or if I dont have time to make tea I take it in capsule form. It also does have nutrients and vitamins in it. If works, keep using it. As for not using other meds - I personally have never had it work so well that I have been able to avoid traditional meds. Perhaps you can but I would be very careful about going off other meds.

Other supplements that you can make into teas that could help are Marshmallow root, peppermint, camomile, tumeric and hops.

Thanks guys for your response. However I am off all meds and only on slippery elm I mix it with apple and mango juice. This is the only thing that has helped me so far even enemas wern't really helping. Anyways see how I go ay Cheers .

Glad it's working for you and you can stop everything else. It's nice to take something that works that isn't slowly killing us at the same time, lol. Hope you can keep off of everything else!! What type/brand are you using and what's your dosage?

hey mel. What other tonics did you take that your naturalistic doctor recommended?

Hey James, Honestly slippery elm is all im taking NOTHING else... I think in the tonic was a mixture of thing for bloating,gas,consipation,stop bleeding,craps and other things, however none of it seamed to work and my natropath was shocked at the outcome of the tonic he put me on because his other paciants with uc helps them alot.
He told me to throw the tonic away and gave me a big bottle of slippery elm in powder form. It has been over two weeks and I cannot believe how well it has worked for me. I was like you and tking supplements and fish oil ect but at least I can say I tried them ay? Touch wood this is actually working for me after months of continues flare ups its FINALLY stopped. No more bleeding or lose stool I feel healthy again :) I am eating all foods that used to irritate me inc tomato,onion,raw fruit n vegi's ..Have you tried it ?

I tried slippery elm for about a year. I think it helped marginally. It basically coats your stomach, is how I saw it. It likely won't survive your digestive acids in order to coat your intestines, but a defective mucus layer is a fundamental part of UC, so at least the idea is in the right direction!

No hun, my natropathy gave it to me. You might be able to try getting it from health food shops maybe different brand but im sure it will have the same effect.

I have not tried slippery elm yet, but might give slippery elm tea a try soon. If anyone is interested in this, below is some info I found on the U of MD Medical Center website.

The following are recommended adult doses for slippery elm:

* Tea: Pour 2 cups boiling water over 4 g (roughly 2 tablespoons) of powdered bark and then steep for 3 - 5 minutes. Drink three times per day.
* Tincture: 5 mL three times per day. Note: Contains alcohol.
* Capsules: 800 - 1,000 mg three times daily. Take with a full glass of water.
* Lozenges: follow dosing instructions on label.
* External application: Mix coarse powdered bark with boiling water to make a poultice; cool and apply to affected area. Never apply slippery elm to an open wound.

Precautions:

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, can trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, under the supervision of a health care provider.

Slippery elm has no serious side effects. Because it coats the digestive tract, it may slow down the absorption of other drugs or herbs. You should take slippery elm 2 hours before or after other herbs or medications you may be taking.

Slippery elm is thought to be safe in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, but no scientific studies have been done to confirm this. The outer bark of the elm tree, however, may contain substances that could increase the risk of miscarriage, so sometimes pregnant women are advised to avoid slippery elm.

Possible Interactions:

There are no scientific reports of slippery elm interacting with any other medications, although it may slow down the absorption of other drugs or herbs.
