Hello All!

I was diagnosed earlier this month with IBD (the doctor was non-specific about what kind and I will no more next week when I have a follow-up appointment).

When I took the prescription for Lialda to the pharmacy I found out that it was going to cost about half of my month's salary up front to get the medicine, so I walked away and determined to find out about alternative solutions to the problem.

I have been chronicling my experiences since my diagnosis for both me and for anyone else who is going through the same thing. I would like to share this blog with everyone in hopes that I can share my insights with you and that you can do the same for me. I would greatly appreciate your support and feedback as I learn more about this condition and the treatments available to me.

Lialda is probably the most expensive 5ASA...Asacol is much less expensive. Also, the drug companies have patient assitance programs for those who do not have insurance and cannot afford their prescriptions. Sicklygirl (I think) gets her drugs for free, and I'm sure she'd be glad to give you some info.

I think that alternative treatments can work, but what I've learned most about this disease so far is that what treatments work for one person, whether they be conventional or alternative, don't work for others. So it really is a process of trial and error. I tend to put more faith in conventional treatments, simply because those medicines have been very well studied, and I myself am a research scientist.

Im in the program for the Asacol. I get a year worth of asacol. If i had to pay for it I dont know what I would do. All you have to do is call this number for Procter and Gamble and get an application mailed to you. Than you fill out your part and than take it to your GI and have them fill out the rest. After you mail it in you just have to wait to see if your accepted. Than they send you like 6 bottles of pills at a time.

Asacol, Colazal, Lialda are harmful to the kidneys. I still plan to live at least another 20 years; so I'm using Probiotics and diet to stay in remission instead of Colitis maintenance medicines.
