I was alway under the suspiction that Colazal was either making my symptoms worse or just not helping. I switched to Sulfasalazine (generic) and the next day immediate improvement. I went poo completely normal this morning, more normal than I have in months on Asacol and then Colazal. I only took 2 Sulfa yesterday after taking 3 the day before, I dropped dosage to see if it was causing a few random mild abdominal pains, nothing real bad just annoying. It did seem to help cutting dosage down.
Basically I just want people to know as long as your not allergic to Sulfa, don't be afraid to try the older and MUCH cheaper drug Sulfasalazine. I think it is doctors last choice as the drug companies push the newer more expensive drugs first whether they work any better or not.
Sulfasalazine is the first drug I took when I was diagnosed with UC. I worked for me for six months and than I started to get 'light headed', nauseaus and I felt like I would faint at any time. My doctor told me that those symptoms were the long term use of Sulfasalazine or salazopyrin as it's called in South Africa. I than switched on differtent medications which did not really help me much.
I don't think that Sulfasalazine can be used as a long term treatment of UC because of it's side effects but it's fantastic for the first six months
