I'm a 19 year old female and I was just diagnosed last week with UC. I have been taking liadal since thursday for the inflammation and was told it takes about 3 weeks to kick in. So what can I do now for my pain??? Everyone tells me to watch what I eat but I feel like no matter what my stomach is in knots and I have to constantly scope out the restroom. The only thing I was told to stay away from was dairy. So any advice on how to calm my stomach down till the meds kick in? It doesn't help that I have finals the next two weeks!!! =O

I had the same problem when I was diagnosed at 19 years old. My flares always came around finals...

Welcome to the world of IBDs. The bathrooms will be your best friend. To calm my stomach I munched on some saltines. Some GIs suggest Imodium- the pink stuff won't work on your colon. During flares I usually try to stay away from caffeine (but coffee used to help), things with a lot of sugar, and I cut way back on fiber. I don't really eat raw veggies unless it is a really good day, and nuts and seeds can do a number on me too.

If your pain is really bad, then you should call your GI and see if they can prescribe something to help with that. I don't have pain, so I don't have any advice on what works, but I'm sure others on here do.

Usually for the pain i just have to wait it out.... take tylenol and just wait it out...go potty

I also have hydrocodone leftover from my last ER visit... i'll take half of one if i reaaaaaaaalllly need it.

I'm currently battling a flare right now, and my suggestion is to eat as bland as possible. Everyone is different, so unfortunately its trial and error. I also have IBS, so that complicates things for me a bit. This particular flare-up I have found that I can tolerate turkey deli sandwiches on white bread with a touch of mayo and mustard. I can eat egg whites, baked lays chips, toast, avocados (my boyfriend made a very mild guacamole and my gut seemed to tolerate it just fine), saltines, applesauce, bananas, etc.

If the pain gets really bad, call your dr. Mine gave me tylenol 3 when I was really in pain.

hey, this is crazy to me. im 19, was diagnosed with UC last week, and started my medication on thursday too! along with prednisone and apriso for inflammation, they gave me tramadol to take for the pain, but luckily i havent needed any at home so far *knock on wood*... eating soft stuff has really helped me (mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, bananas and such). they said to eat things low in fiber (stay away from whole grains), no raw fruits or vegetables, and drinking gatorade has really increased my energy. stress is a huge trigger for me, so i talked to my professors and they all agreed to work with me. im not sure that is an option for you, but taking incompletes gives me all summer to get into remission and make up the exams. i miss everyone at school so much, but i have no idea how i would make it through exams this week. major props. hope everything goes well!!

I was just diagnosed too about a month ago.  I don't have any pain but when I took Lialda and Asacol within a week my stomach hurt so bad.  I was ready to go to the ER I couldn't stand it.  I stopped taking the medicine and within two days my stomach was better.  Also,  when I was taking the Lialda and Asacol I was going to the bathroom about 20 times and day.  I would usually only go 8-10 times a day(not like that's any better).  So, just make sure your stomach pain doesn't get worse.  Good luck.  I know it is scary.

Get a Rx from your GI for Nulev. You should also start taking some probiotics and fish oil.

Thank you all for your help. I ended up going to the GI Dr. because of the pain and he told me he didn't want to give me anything just yet =[ If i am still in pain next week he is going to give me steroids as a last resort. which kinda sucks because i have my tests now. but he did double my lialda so hopefully that will kick in sooner and ill be extra careful on what i eat!!

If you stomach is just spasming, and you need to get to and take tests, you could get some immodium (pills). Should help you get through short term until the GI gives you something else. I haven't used it particularly but I lived on the lomitil while going through school and taking the big clinical tests/national boards. Nothing worse than a big cramp in the middle of a test that just makes the brain quit working.
