For the last 4 days I have been using the Rowasa(generic) and have been bleeding pretty bad since starting them. I was not having any blood issues before using them and felt I was pretty close to getting into remission. My GI will be out of town till May 1st, so I can't reach him. I am thinking of not using it tonight to see if the blood goes away. Anyone else have this kind of problem? I have used these before without any problems.

It could be coincidence since you're taking them because you're flaring....

How many times a day are you going? What other symptoms are you having...stool consistency..etc?

I am having about 9BM's a day. I didn't use one last night, and this morning NO blood. I never had this kind of problem when I used Rowasa, but the generic seems to not work as well. Since I'm so close to being in remission, I think I'll stop the emama s since it gave me bloody BM's and some cramping.

When first diagnosed, I used Salofalk enemas (Canada's Rowasa) and they controlled my UC for about 6 months without taking any oral meds. Then I started flaring and increased the enemas to nightly. The bleeding got worse and worse. I used xylocaine enemas for 2 months to get my UC under control again and then started alternating them with Salofalk. On nights I used Salofalk, I had bleeding the next day. On xylocaine nights - no bleeding the next day. I stopped using Salofalk enemas completely and only use budesonide enemas now.

It's not the 5-ASA in the enema that's causing the bleeding because I'm now taking Asacol with no problems, so I think it must be a preservative or something in the enemas.

I've not had that problem, for they've worked well for me.....but with everything, there are changes made by the manufacturers, and that might be worth an enquiry.

I'll look into maybe emailing Salofalk. It seems there are many who have problems with the generic Rowasa.

Totally sucks considering they're a good option for dealing with UC.

My experience with Salofalk enema is very similar with yours. It worked well with me 3 years ago and now it gives me terrible urgency and gas. I switch to Salofalk suppository (2 per night) and I'm fine with it. And I take Salofalk tablets without any problem.

Sod, I just had a terrible experience with generic Rowasas last month when my UC started to flare. They definitely made me feel worse, a scary experience because I had used them successfully for yrs. Hedgehog could well be right re the preservatives bothering us. My gastro advised me to stop using them & go with oral med, which I did. Thankfully, original Colazal has worked to heal the ulceration that showed during a flex-sig exam. Whenever I bring up the issue of generic meds, my gastro, who subspecializes in IBD treatment, does not seem surprised to hear that I had trouble with them. I think we all have to beware. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
