Hi everyone, I did a search but couldn't find anything regarding Canasa side effects.   After taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection in my mouth (prescribed by my PC), I went into a flair (blood, mucous, diarrhea) so my GI doctor took me off the antibiotics and then put me on Canasa suppositories.   Within 24 hours my symptoms started to get better but I started having cramping. For us women, I can liken it to menstrual cramps. In a nutshell, I use Canasa and the bad symptoms go away but I get cramping and if I don’t use them then I have no cramping but I get everything else.   Has anyone else experienced this?

It may be that you are intolerant of mesalamines. This is what happened to me too when I was in the process of trying to find out which medication was making me worse. It turned out that all mesalamines made things horrible for me and Rowasa and Canasa increased my symptoms and caused quite a bit of cramping. Maybe you should call up your GI and see if he can prescribe either steroid enemas or steroid suppositories to help ease this flare.

Thanks Red - I was going to call them this week if thing didn't get better. I had no idea that someone could have an intolerance to mesalamines.   Thanks!

Oh, yes, wish I didn't!  I had same reactions to all mesalamines - rectal and oral!  Try the low dose steroid rectal meds.
