Hi-
My colon was always great until I was put into the hospital with preterm labor 21 years ago. They stuck IVs (with what I later found out was an experimental drug) into me, and my bowels started going bad.
I was diagnosed with UC two years later. At one point, I couldn't leave the house for six months and was in bed for one month; I had only enough strength to try to make it to the bathroom in time. I went through all the prednisone, asacol, etc., for three years with NO improvement. I gathered my courage and threw away the drugs, making the correct assumption that doctors had caused my colitis and that doctors were finishing off what was left of my health. The side effects of the drugs were crippling, and who knows what permanent damage was done by them.
Drug-free, I began a learning tour of my health. We had always eaten pretty well, but we gradually came to eat zero processed food, no chain restaurants, and lots of nutritional supplements. Life became livable again, but I always had to worry about attacks, and the poopies ruled my life. I was only occasionally incontenent, but had zero solid bowel movements.
In March of 2008, I was watching the BBC show You Are What You Eat and one of Jillian's recipes was to throw one cup of water into the blender with one pear and one apple (skin on!!) every morning. The third week in March I started doing this and by April 1st my colitis was completely gone. Eighteen and a half months later, I still have textbook poops.
Twenty years of misery, one week of recovery.
I still eat only whole, real foods, and hope to be able to afford organics only someday. My path has been educational and has helped my son to learn about good food and health. He and my husband do the "funny" smoothie every day, also. A plus has been that my arthritis pain is almost gone, too. Now I just have to learn how to live a free life again, realizing that the constraints have been lifted!
I don't know if anyone else will benefit from this story, but please realize that your problems may be caused by drugs/doctors, and that "medical" treatment generally only tries to subdue symptoms, not restore health I believe that drugs actually degrade health. Most MDs wouldn't know how to promote health if their life depended upon it!
Good Luck.
