How do you pick a GI doctor when moving to a new area?

I'm going away to school and don't know anyone in the area. I did a search on the CCFA website and see the nearest GI is about 45 minutes away. There is a large group as well as a few individual doctors. Right now I'm going to a doctor who is part of a large group and have mixed feelings about him and the way things are run there. Is there any kind of research I can do on the doctors in my area to see if there are any problems or who is good? I also need a GP so I was thinking of asking whichever GI I get for a referral.

Click on the state and you can narrow it down I think to city and the specialty field.

The other thing is to ask here  specifically for doctors names in what city, etc.

When I moved last time I asked the specialist that I was with to refer me to one in the area where I was moving to and they do know of  doctors in different cities.  This way I didn't have to go searching around for someone good and they made my first appointment so I didn't have to wait and go through my family doc to get a referal.

I'm with Puffed Rice, ask your current GI to recommend a new GI for you in your new city. GIs network so he/she is bound to refer you to someone good.

Insurance coverage, take note of how they run their office, then trust my instincts.

i post right here in this forum... we have wonderful people here who are great help. I recently relocated to california and the members helped me choose not only the doctor but also which is a better insurance in this area...Sweetie & Lonie were a great help... Carol(lonie) has been SUPER-SUPER help ... she helped me choose my GP, GI and even gynecologist.

If there's a good hospital in the area, you could call the head of GI medicine and ask who they would recommend for a young person with UC.

Thanks for the help everyone. When I was first diagnosed my GP recommended me to a GI doctor and he was horrendous. I was a good athlete and had never been sick before then so I didn't know any better than to listen 100% to the doctor which was big mistake. That whole experience has made me realize the importance of a good doctor. The area I'm going is pretty far from where I live now, so I'm not sure my current GI would know anyone. There is a hospital in the area so I'll try that in addition to asking my current doctor. Its nice to know I can run things by people in this forum.

Where I'm relocating is in the Salt Lake City area. These are the ones listed on the CCFA website. Has anyone been successful in asking the CCFA for advice?

You could check out the University of Utah Medical Center to find out whether any gastroenterologists there treat IBD patients. RE CCFA listings: yes, I got my gastro from their NY listings in 1990. This doctor happened to have been trained by a gastro who co-founded CCFA in 1967, Dr. Henry Janowitz. Someone I worked with occasionally consulted Dr. Janowitz about GI problems & told me that if anyone could figure out what was going wrong, HE was the gastro to see. And he trained his grad doctors very well! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
