My GI had me on 50 mgm of 6MP but my white count went up to 4.0 (normal limit) and I started a flare. He started me on 30 mgm of prednisone but that did nothing, so he increased the prednisone to 40 mgm with a 5 mgm per week taper and increased the 6MP to 100 mgm. This was the 11th of June. I also take nine Colazal capsules per day, Cort enema in the evening and Canasa suppository in the morning. I experienced about four episodes of very bad heart burn....felt like someone punched me in the upper stomach and pain radiated into my back. All four times I was sitting here at the computer. Relief came when I stood up and walked a bit. The doctor then told me to take Nexium every morning and this has given me great relief.
The only thing I don't like about this increase in dosage of the 6MP is that I feel very tired and have a metallic taste in my mouth. I've been on 6MP (never this high of a dose) for six years. I have ulcerative proctitis and (keeping my fingers crossed) am starting to go into remission.....no blood, formed bowel movements and no urgency or pain the last few days.
My bilirubin was a bit high and yesterday I had an ultrasound of the liver, pancreas and gall bladder to rule out any underlying problem as to the upper gastric distress. Next week I go for tons of blood tests...soooo, we'll see.
