White patches on stool while taking mesalamine enema, is this normaling?

I was taking Canasa before, ocassionally I can see white patches (quater size, several patches) on my stool.

But that's only happy on first 1/4 of my stool. I assume stool from sigmoid was not affected.

My GI said that should be solid mucus. Sounds reasonable.

5 days ago, I switched Canasa to mesalamine enema (4g/60mL).

It works fine in the first 2 days, while from the 3rd day, I found more and more white patches on my stool,

the white stuff is a lot more than that when I was taking Canasa, and even all the stool have white stuff.

Do anyone of you have the same experience? I am wondering it is mucus or just from enema?

Except this, no blood no urgency, looks fine.

Yep it can definately be from the enemas. With the enemas you can literally have a rainbow of colors.

     Yes, I have that too after my Cort enemas.  I do the Cort enemas in the evening, but I have a hard time holding them in, and the Canasa in the morning.  Usually, my first bowel movement after the Canasa has the white patches on it but I know it is from the Canasa.  If I have a second or third bowel movement, they look normal.  At the moment I am tapering prednisone.

I get them too and I don't even take any oral RX so it's likely just mucus in/on your stool, but if you're concerned you should definitely talk to your doc.

Sounds like the norm to me....you need to be on them nightly for at least 2 weeks.

Try not to micromanage too much....the med will reach into the sigmoid and maybe a bit beyond depending on the shape of one's inards..lol...

Even if you do have mucus, it's no biggie...makes sense that while healing and having formed stool, the colon will produce more to avoid injury.

As well...you may have IBS....

Continue to feel well...and remember that you have to taper the enemas to every second night for a few weeks, then every third...etc.


It's been written (lol) that enemas twice a week do help maintain remission...that could be every 3rd night, every 4th night, or the 3rd night and then the 4th..some have done it just on the weekends and not during the week.

Eventually you'll figure it out.
