it seems like this year, of which i spent mostly in flare and on pred.....lost 30 lbs...and was anemic....my nails have gotten really ugly.....my pinkies have deep vertical rigdes...the others are ridges less, but seem to get little horizontal humps that move as the nails grow....my thumbs have horizontal ridges.....seems like this all started during this flare.....i'm wondering if it is from anemia, or some deficiency....anyone else had this problem.....

I have the same thing. Are you on any meds?

I have these slight ridges in the fingernails as well -- most noticeable on my thumbs.
I read somewhere that this is a common result of vitamin/mineral deficiencies due to UC. It's probably a good warning sign to just address any nutritional deficiencies in your diet. Maybe a good multivitamin supplement should make it better.

Yes, I had the deep horizontal ridges. I started on a good vitamin in addition to Biotin. After being on Biotin (5mgs or 5000mcgs) for 3 months, I noticed the ridges smoothed out.

I used to have bad nails, until I changed my diet (eating only healthy whole foods, nothing processed, no fast-foods, refined sugar and such) plus I use extra virgin olive oil as a daily moisturizer which is great for the nails and skin.

I have ridges, I don't care about
those.
Every time I used to go to my GI, they'd have me put my nails together, like index fingernail touching completely with the other index fingernail. If there is a diamond I think it meant I had enough protein, if not, you need more.

Hmm..
Take your indrex fingers, and press them together so the tops of them are touching, all the way down to the nail. The space where the cuticle areas should be touching should really be making a sort of diamond shape... does that make sense?

Rio in Maryland,
Are you still experiencing problems with your fingernails?
