Side Effects from Lialda

Hi!

I am a brand new member, and have some questions about this medication. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2005.

I have a family history of heart disease and diabetes. I have been on Lialda for a few months with success, but have had problems with high blood pressure and a high pulse rate. I am wondering if anyone else had experienced these symptoms as well, or if I am succumbing to my family's (bad) medical history?

Hi...welcome to the forum.

I would think that Lialda would be a positive rather than a negative regarding blood pressure and high pulse rate.

Are you female or male? How old are you? Are you overweight? How are your eating habits? How is your stress level and how do you handle it?
Do you smoke?

Have you had a through physical exam to have your thyroid, cholesterol, hormone levels checked?

Had the doctor put you through heart testing or stress testing or requested a heart echo done?

Wow, lots of questions....which makes it more complicated than to just think it's the Lialda.

"The most common side effects of mesalamine are headache and flatulence. Hair loss and itching also may occur. Infrequent side effects include increased heart rate, acne, pancreatitis, back pain, fatigue, tremor, ear pain, and blood disorders. Kidney dysfunction has been associated with mesalamine."

While joy's list may be side effects you're experiencing, there are more questions to answer and should be looked at in case there are contraindications from a preexisting condition.

As well Ozzie...what's the dosage of Lialda you're taking?

It could be that your body cannot tolerate a high dosage of mesalamine at the same time as Lialda offers....

If your doc started you on the highest dosage, it could be that a lower dosage that is increased would have been better.

Fine line sometimes.

I think that Quincy raises a valid point re dosage, based on my own experience with Colazal in 2003-4. It was recommended at 3 capsules 3 times daily, which gave me unpleasant side effects by 10 weeks. My gastro then decided I could try reducing it, which worked for MY body. So-- there is always a chance (since with UC one size does not necessarily fit all patients!) that you might do better on a lower dose of Lialda or on a different 5-ASA med or combo of oral/rectal 5-ASAs. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I started on 3 per day, my GI doc told me I can decrease down to 1 per day if it works for me...haven't tried that yet. But I might give 2 a try for awhile and maybe one eventually.
It's just that I never experienced the high pulse rate or high blood pressure until after my diagnosis of UC in '05. So I was starting to think maybe the two were related.
I am a non-smoking 40 year old female who had a hysterectomy in '07. Working on the diet-thing since I really don't like to take so much medicine (the Liadla and Lisinopril), and don't want to be on cholestrol meds --which my PCP says is the next step due to family history. I feel pretty good, really and my UC is under control. Only one flare up since the original one which landed me in the hospital.
I appreciate your help, I don't really know anyone else with this disease and it helps to seek advice and support online.

my GI started me with 3 Lialda per day & in just 3-4 days i had constipation so i reduced to 2 per day as per quincy's suggestion & i did feel better.
