How long for Colazal to work?

I recently started taking the generic form of Colazal--I've been on it for 10 days but have seen little improvement.  Anyone here use it?  How long does it usually take to kick in?  I'm taking 3 750 mg tablets, 3x daily.  When should I give up and switch to something else?

dx with ulcerative colitis (60 percent of colon affected) in Nov. 08

Currently on Colazal, hydrocortisone enemas and suppositories

Fish Oil, L-Glutamine, Probiotics

Not in remission yet, but no blood.  4-7 bm's a day with varying urgency.

It took two weeks for me to see improvement.

The first time I used Colazal was with my second flare. It worked instantly. The inflammation improved substantially in three days. My GI did a sigmoidoscopy, diagnosed me with UC, and put me on prednisone in addition to the Colazal. The bleeding gradually subsided over two weeks and my GI reduced my prednisone dosage. Then the medicine started to stop working. So my GI switched me to Asacol. I never noticed any improvement with the Asacol, and I could not reduce my prednisone dosage below 25 mgs without the bleeding getting much worse. I did fecal transplantation, went into remission immediately, weaned off the prednisone, and stopped taking Asacol.

When I first saw blood with my third flare (after I had been on antibiotics), I took Asacol right away. My flare worsened. I was in a full-fledged flare by the sixth day.

I switched from Asacol to Colazal this past spring. For about two weeks it gave me some funky d (not d I get with UC). I was almost about to call my GI and say I want to stop it until my mom talked me out of it. I'm glad I didn't because after that it worked amazing for me. I thought I was in remission before with Asacol but I had no idea what I was missing with Colazal.

Seemed like it worked within first three weeks the first time I went on it.

I was on the generic Colazol for a week. My GI didnt specify the real stuff so i got generic. It was terrible, made it worse. i had him give me a script for the real stuff. started to work in a few days. Im also doing Canasa 1000mg at night.

I have made a lot of progress in controlling UC over time with brandname Colazal, but the generic made by Watson made me sick! I had to get off it due to severe headaches it caused, plus it did not stop D. You might do better switching to a different generic (there are 3 that I know of), or to brandname Colazal if what you're now taking does not relieve your symptoms within 2-4 weeks. A lot depends on getting good nutrition & adequate rest, too-- especially if you have bleeding, urgency, & multiple bms daily. Best wishes! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
