Anyone taken Cephalexin (antibiotic) and have any experiences with how it affected their UC?

Hi all,

I have a skin infection and my doctor is demanding I take an antibiotic. 99% of the world would be excited that they get an antibiotic, but you know very well us UC'ers HATE TAKING ANTIBIOTICS BECAUSE THEY CAN TRIGGER FLARES! hehe.

So, two questions: Anyone taken this antibiotic and have any experiences to share regarding how it affected their UC? It's called Cephalexin.

Second, any general how-to-survive-antibiotic-therapy-without-flaring advice? I've got my probiotics lined up, but I'm VERY worried as the last two times I've taken abx over the last 5 years, I have had a flare. :( Of course, if I don't take it, I'm in trouble with this infection... lose lose scenario!

I heard this antibiotic is hard on the intestines and can cause c.diff and UC flares. I am not a Dr but this is what I have read. I have taken it in the past, before I had UC. I often wonder if it wiped out my good flora and made me more susceptible to UC.

I am always trying to link up any possible things that could have caused UC but the truth is that I was probably predisposed to it from geneitcs. No one in my family has this illness as far as I know but maybe I am the first or maybe a distant relative had it and I don't know.

Ugh! I think that's generic Keflex. Ask whether you can take something else. Keflex messed up my colon bigtime when I was Rxed it for tonsillitis-- in fact, I think it's what pushed me into UC by 1980. Can you get relief from a topical antibiotic for your skin? / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
